If your PS3 is still under warranty, then don't bother with the home remedies of YLOD. Get Sony to repair them FOC.

Also, so I'm ready for the backup process, do I just need a second hard drive with the same amount of data?
Yes you do as it is backed up on a separate drive. If you backed up on the drive that's inside the PS3 and that drive fails, that's not called a backup plan is it?

Also, how does the partition appear on other computers if I remove the HD from the PS3? Isn't it FAT32?
It's not. It's proprietary to Sony. It doesn't register as FAT32 or NTFS

Replacing HDDs of the PS3s do not void warranty.

Go read this thread starting around first week of April 2009. Or Google YLOD and YouTube.

While you highlight the account you want to remove, press and then you see the option to delete. CAUTION: if the account is a shared account where you have used it to download shared games, deleting the account will disable the shared games.

My PS3 has YLOD again last night. Have done some research and will attempt a third time with some liquid flux treatment prior to reflowing. That's third time failure already and the shortest one yet! Interestingly enough, it failed when I put in a disc, just like the second time. Before the second and third failure, I could put in any disc and it'll play fine.

I also think the current weather is not helping any. So I've invested in some cheap and hopefully not so noisy 5cm fans that will sit/stand right behind the back vents. Will run it using a separate power supply.

When I tuned the PS3 back on it formatted the drive and that was that.

When you say you have a black screen when you turn it on, are you sure it's not a connectivity problem? If the PS3 output is 1080p and you're set doesn't support that then you'll get a problem display.
No, I've tried all 3 connections. Composite, component, and HDMI. None are working, I get a black screen and no sound, but if I plug in a something else into those slots on the TV, they work fine.

I'm just going to have to send it back to see if I can get it repaired or refurbed or whatever. I

Well I mean if I open up my PS3, doesn't that mean Sony won't even accept it back for the $150 fix? Basically, opening my PS3 eliminates that option, right?

That sucks.

What have you heard about others that have the problem recurring? Has anyone been able to fix it and it didn't come back? I'm tempted to manually fix it, but with the problem not actually being fixed, I don't know if it's worth it.

They actually have to log in as you on their PS3 and then go to Account Management and Unauthorize it manually. Unfortunately all you can do is ask them to do it.

What are your intentions with connecting your PS3 to your cable box?

I cant plug the ps3 into the tv directly, it is wall mounted and there are no jacks accessible, We have a receiver Denon AVR-1905 and a cable box Motorola DCT3416. We plugged the ps3 into the motorola using a hdmi cable, but we cant get it to work

What is your current setup for your home theater? Do you have a Television with an HDMI input? Or do you have an AV Receiver with HDMI?

The reason why I ask this is because more than likely, your Time Warner cable box cannot act as a AV receiver with your PS3.

I recommend trying to connect your PS3 to your TV or an AV receiver.

Well, you can still connect with a component cable via PS3 to receiver then and you can still watch it in HD.

OK, I am really dumb. The component cable is the one that comes with the ps3? I don't really know where to plug them in on my receiver. Then I can watch in hd? but not play the games in HD?

You can watch and play them in HD using the cables that came with your PS3. Though keep in mind that there are various standards of High Definition.

However, be confident that once you've done some more research on your receiver and different kinds of cables/connections for your Home Theatre, you'll be more than satisfied with your results.

To better answer your question, you put the cables in your receiver where-ever they may fit and are typically color coordinated. Be sure that you are putting them into the places where it states 'Input' and not 'Output'.

You can find this on the front of your receiver typically. Once you have given me this piece of information, I'll be making you a diagram of what cable to use plus where to plug it into.

I recommend that you find this information fairly soon as its 11:45pm my time and I'd like to go to bed sometime.

Sorry SteveM, but I need to go to bed now.

If someone doesn't help you by the time I sign back in tomorrow, I'll do as I said and draw you that diagram.
