It's too bad you have to reformat with a new PS3. If it could be plug and play like on a PC, it would be much much better. Then you could have guys cloning their drives, though.
I'm mixed. $150 is painless and easy. I'm generally good with electronics and don't think this beyond me... How to tell if it's the mobo/solder, power supply or drive? |

Sony can and has refused service for those that took the sticker off. Usually after getting it in and sending it back. Even for the fee.
Starting to feel a bit... chagrined for mocking the 360 so often when my Xenon is still going... even if it's just because I never use it. |

AGAIN, YLOD is a catch-all problem. It's a general failure. So reflowing may or may not fix your YLOD problem. Quote:

I can only see Sony refusing to fix it would be if you remove some of the hardware components like the Power Supply or even Blu-ray drive. It would be safe to assume that they were removed to be sold. |

Even if you do find 2 cases on a different forum, I cannot verify the legitamency of it as no one here has had an issue.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm gonna try to do it myself on Friday. It took me awhile to take the whole system apart, and had to stop at midnight. I'm gonna do the hard parts Friday.
As far as data is concerned, there is NO WAY to get your data off the HD unless you plug back into the original system? I have some really important stuff that exists ONLY on that HD.. I'd really like to get it off there. |

Sure. I couldn't even verify it if someone on this forum made a claim. I do think we're a far smaller subset of PS3 users here than on the official forums, though.

After getting YLOD, are there any telltale signs that you could have a bad power supply, as opposed to an overheating problem?

Gotcha, so it probably just needs a reflow, thanks!
I was also told to "use liquid flux". What does this mean exactly? Where am I supposed to apply liquid flux, and where could I buy some? Anyone tried using this technique?(If I recall Writesimply may have mentioned this previously) |

Want to give a big thanks for these guides.
I brought a YLOD Ps3 back from death, and swapped out the bad laser on my motorstorm 80 gig ps3 and its working flawlessly. Really, once you take apart the PS3 a few times, its insanely easy to figure out how to put it back together. When i took out the cover on the motorstorm 80 gig ps3, the fan became loud from that point on. So i tore it down to the board, and re-did the thermal paste to Arctic Silver 5 and ive had it folding @ home for hours and it never gets above "dead silent" fan speed. Very nice. I suggest anyone whos fan is abnormally loud to take apart the PS3 and put on some arctic silver 5. |

Hmm back to thinking I should maybe just fix this myself. My only real question is on the heat gun part. Guess I'll need a digital model that is variable rather than the most common...
The PDF instructions say to set for 350, but most of the guns I'm seeing on Home Depot's page, for example, only do 750 or 1000 degrees, which is way hotter than the 350 specified. I see a Ryobi that does 200°, 500°, 800°, and 1100°... Would this one be good? Milwaukee Digital Heat Gun Model 3300 http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...egoryID=527280 |

I think thats the same kind my friend has(the Milwaukee one). We're going to try it tomorrow night. I've actually heard that people have better results heating it higher and longer, so maybe 800 wouldn't be too bad. Careful, though.

I used 800 degrees to get the YLOD fixed. 200 on both sides of the board at first, 500 across the top, then 800 on cpu/gpu 30 seconda a piece in a swirl motion, 2 times per chip, then 15 seconds per chip once, then cooled it down to 500 on both chips for 10 seconds, then 200 on the chips and then the rest of the board. Let sit for 25-30 min. Then apply nice thin coat of arctic silver 5 all over the gpu/cpu and put it back together.
Worked awesomely. |

Well, I just bought the service for the YLOD from the ebay user JD thats in the OP.
I'll let you guys know how it goes ... He had some very nice feedback in regards to fixing PS3's. Alot of people even were quoted as to saying "Sony shouldnt even be an option, JD should be their first choice!" With shipping its 89.99 then however much it cost me to ship to him. (he's based in Michigan) So wish me luck! |
