Got my coffin back and there's a note to the effect of "noticible modification" or tampering with the warranty sticker means they can send it back without looking at it. So make sure you get it back together good first.

I'm still on the fence... since I've been borrowing a friend's PS3 while he's out of town, haven't felt the imperative. Half of me wants to do at least a temp fix to be able to do another backup (don't want to lose my Rag Doll Kung-Fu or all the saved game data I did since putting in the 320GB Drive)...

half just says it's not worth my time and the $150 is cheaper. especially since I would need to buy a heat gun, unless I try to ghetto it with my old lady's hairdryer or something.

Also, has anyone tried using something like the Intercooler after they got YLOD and fixed it? It would be nice to prevent YLOD from coming back.. is this really just a heat issue?
Definitely interested in a "quick fix" like m aybe the 360 Towel trick or something that would give me a few hours to do a backup, disable / delete the accounts, etc.

I think they are just saying that if you are trying to 'mod' (hack) your system and failed doing so which caused your PS3 to break, they are not going to fix it.

Please power down until system is cool agin" or something close to that anyways.
Some other person had this problem BUT it's caused by the heat spreader being detached off the chip. If you look at the previous page, there's a picture of the mobo with the RSX and Cell chips and another pic where the chips are shown without the heat spreader. If the heat spreader is not coming into contact with the chip - and that the reflow effort succeeded - you'd get that "gotten hot" message.

So what you have are two problems. The heat spreader detachment and reflow. Check both chips to see if the spreader is loose. If they are, clean it up first before applying the thermal paste exactly where they were in the beginning.

Then apply the reflow with the liquid flux.

Quote:
But before I could power down ... beep beep beep YLOD. Should I try to find this reflux or send it to Sony and pray I get a good one back? Seems to me like the reflux needs to be a step in the first reflow you do. Is this a bad idea?
Indeed, the LIQUID FLUX (and not reflux) should be included in the reflow process to begin with. But nobody knew that YLOD could reoccur.

Well, that's not entirely true. The PS3 just can't bitstream TrueHD or DTS-HD. DD and DTS do just fine being bitstreamed.

The fans blowing hot air out the ports in normal. But I would suggest that if you have it in a cabinet, keep the door open so you get a cross breeze through the area; instead of just having the back cut open.

I have mine in an ET stand and I enlarged the opening on the back as well. I found out the hard way that wasn't good enough. I set a small desk fan behind mine blowing hot air out of the cabinet and it made a huge difference. You can see pics of my PS3 and where it sits in my HT gallery. The fan is a 4" fan like this.

I tried a USB powered computer cooling fan first, but it couldn't move enough air to make any difference. I ended up getting this one at Target for $5. It runs all the time, but it's pretty quiet, and I can only hear it while the entire system is off.

P.S. I looked for pics of your PS3 in your HT gallery, but I didn't see it in any of the pics.

I see it now. And I think it would definitely help to actively move some of the hot air out of there.

What do you mean, you sent it to Sony to be repaired but they noticed that your warranty sticker was removed? So they didn't fix it for you?

This is what I'm worried about. I did the reflow in order to backup my PS3, and it works now. But if it's inevitable that the YLOD is just going to continuously come back, I'd rather pay the $150 for a new system. But is that even an option at this point, since I did the reflow? I screwed up my hard drive bay and I had to bend the metal to make it fit properly.

Cause running movies makes it work more since the disc is always spinning unlike game discs.

So you got a PS3 and you think your BLURAY player is done...

STOP...

Before you try and return your Playstation to get your BLURAY refurbished...

Please take a few moments to listen to me, your friendly Playstation God...

Before I begin I'd like to say that Slant 6 sucks and Socom's epic failure reigns supreme.

I overlooked the solution for nearly a week, debating whether to strip it apart and fix it myself or send it in to get refurbished...

I have had my 60 gig system since day 1, still got a spare 60 gig in the box, kickin it in the closet...the problem arose after adding a 16 gig Patriot card to my SD slot along side with my 20 gig compact flash card in its slot, and a 4 gig prostick duo in its slot...basically occupying all topside ports. Here's where the plot thinkens: Out of my 4 USB slots on the low side, I have two 16 gig HP sticks (lol I know, I know, I am a memory expansion nut). I got a message from my system saying that all slots had been taken up and there was no room for the processor to accept any more external memory cards of any type. BTW, at this point I was not yet aware I had an issue. So I disregarded it and just tapped off my ProStick Duo and went on to backup my system on my Patriot card, shut it down and went on with my day.

I picked up the brand new Star Trek The Motion Picture 7 disc Blu Ray set that I recommend to all trekkies...about a week went by and I decided to pop the first Trek in and to my dismay I encountered the black screen of death immediately following the cute little puddle of water loading symbol on the top right of the screen, followed by the play symbol at the bottom left of the screen leading to the black screen of death as I've already mentioned.

As you are aware, at this time, panic, fear and the end of life as I know it was at hand. I quickly ran through several mnore of the discs and and immedately concluded that the Disc set had not been written on and it was in fact a faulty product. I thought to myself...Hah! There's no way it could be my Playstation because my Playstation is solid and its just badass and I refuse to believe the Blu Ray lens is at fault.

So I quickly returned the Trek set back the the electronic's store where purchased and proceeded to chew out everyone in between me and the returns counter lol...The store manager and I used a stand alone Sony Blu Ray player on display and fired one of the Trek discs up that had previously failed on my system. Again, to my dismay, it immediately booted up and worked properly...The conclusion was that the discs were fine....

So I went home, called Sony, and let them have the brunt end of an anger management episode explaining that we (the people) need a firmware update for our Blu Ray software ASAP...end of story...

A weeks time passed and now here's the kicker:

I conclude that the processor of the Playstation 3 can only handle so much external media plugins at once as previously stated. With all the ports full and the Pro Stick tapped off I was running the maximum external memory plugins available. Then I had an astonishing realization that saved me the $150 to send in the system and get it restored...

I thought to myself suddenly, "DUH!"

With all the ports I had in use, the systems processor had no room to run the Blu Ray disc when I started the Blu Ray movie. Leading me to the conclusion to tap off one more external memory leaving me one available. In turn, allowing me to fire my Blu Rays right up.

Problem-free to this day. And there you go, if this is your situation I hope that I helped you out or that I can prevent anyone from encountering the same problem ever again.

Sincerely,

WHISKEY37

P.S. Hit me up with a message on the PSN if I saved your life, I'd love to hear about it. Game on ladies and gentlemen, have a good night. BTW, if your looking for an FPS team tactical trainer I'm your man. I run classes from joes to pros teaching the art of war with extreme squad based movement and tactical operations in game and run a $5 enrollment per player and accept PayPal. Contact me on the PSN for details...see you around in cyberspace.
