I have gotten rid of the YLOD using the method. Instead of reflowing, i would try this way first since its easier. The bolts holding down the heatsink apply most of the pressure on the two corners while leaving the other two corners some what "loose". No matter how much you bend the brackets or how much washers you use, the opposite corners of the heatsink will still be not as "tight" as the corners that are bolted. This can be seen by the uneven thermal paste pattern.

What I have done is insert a shim/bracket between the fan and the heatsink applying more pressure on the corners of the RSX. This helps connect the broken joints. I've got rid of many YLODS doing this! The only problem is the fan speeds up to the highest level because the shim is dissipating the heat somewhat I'm assuming.

Maybe we can come up with a better Shim material (aluminum, copper, etc) and a better place to place it...

I have pictures if you guys need.
Definitely interested in seeing these pics.

I tried a USB powered computer cooling fan first, but it couldn't move enough air to make any difference. I ended up getting this one at Target for $5. It runs all the time, but it's pretty quiet, and I can only hear it while the entire system is off.

P.S. I looked for pics of your PS3 in your HT gallery, but I didn't see it in any of the pics.
I'm interested in a similar sized fan. Do you have a link from target?

I purchased the exact little fan at walmart as well. 5 bucks. It is very quiet and if it works it'll be money well spent.

Default PS3 settings for SACD optimization

I think this is the first time I've ever posted a question or even replied to a post in this thread.

Can anyone provide me with the optimum settings for playing back SACD on the PS3. Or do I even need to be concerned about it? Any advice it much appreciated.

John

PS~ Great thread btw Mike!

Default PS3 Troubleshooting - Help Please

Hey everyone. Looking for some help trying to determine the problem with my PS3. I was watching a Blu-ray when it suddenly froze. I attempted to eject it but it stalled and made small beeping sounds. I put a video game in to test it and the PS3 recognized the game but it did not load it. I received the error message "An error occurred during the start operation (8001050F)." Hard drive appears to be fine because I can play demoes from my hard drive. Any thoughts on how I can troubleshoot this? Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Well I haven't really monkey'd with my settings for SACD, but I just assumed just have it use an HDMI connection, lol.

Oh and I'm still on vacation, FYI, but I just managed to get onto the internet for a little bit.

It sounds like the Blu-Ray drive laser burnt out. If you're under warranty with Sony, call their customer support to get it fixed, otherwise ou have a few options: Pay $150 for Sony to fix it for you, attempt to fix it yourself, buy a new PS3.

Here's a link to Marine Mike's PS3 troubleshooting guide (including instructions to replace the laser) : https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=35895

Default red flashing light

So last night I am watching a movie and my ps3 beeps then powers down and the light flashes yellow once then the red light is flashing.
when I try to turn it back on it instantly beeps and then the light start flashing again.
Its clean, on top of the entertainment center and in a well ventilated area.
Its a 60gb and I will be honest it has earned its money, my ps3 get worked about 2-3 hours a day between blu's and games.

Called Sony today as from what I gather a red flashing light is game over man. so now I wait for a box from Sony and I have a $150 hold on my card.
keep your fingers crossed for me, I really want my 60gb back as i do play ps2 games and use the card readers. Besides non of my games are backed up either.

I just got the exact problem, but I can turn it on for a couple minute, but then it shut down again with the red flashing light...

This YLOD thing is really starting to take off... I haven't looked but has Sony made any kind of announcement about this? I imagine they'll keep quiet as long as most people keep fixing it themselves. Eventually we're all gonna have to band together and let them know we are thru solving their problems. And it's not a one time fix. I'm on my fourth fix. I love my PS3 and would hate life if I had to be without it. I think it's time for Sony to step up. How long did it take for the 360 folks to own up and start fixing there RLOD's?

Best analogy for Sony is going to be the laser issue on what was it the original Playstation? I imagine many of us will be getting our $150 back eventually.

I had high hopes and the PS3 seems so well designed, but the fact that dust gets in many places that we can't get it out of kinda points to a design flaw. Right now, we're still eons better off than the 360, but not fullproof like it appeared at first. Maybe instead of ~30% failure every 8-16 months like RROD on the 360, we're looking at something like 10-15% YLOD every 24-36 months? Hopefully not worse than that, cause Sony will be in seroius hurt if they end up with a systemic issue anywhere close to the level of 360. PS3 will never recover this generation, if it is.

Not sure what you're basing this off because I haven't seen an abnormal level of complaints. More complaints as the install base grows and the time since each model (that people use to identify) launched distances but no skyrocketing of failures.

When you're on a forum where that happens (as I was on the OXM-UK forum) you well aware it's happening and I don't see half, quarter or even an eighth of that here with far more active users.

Default I Am Legend No Longer Plays in PS3

Hey There,

I wrote about this once before and since at that time the disk started working again, it was don't worry, be happy. But, in the last week or so, I popped in IAL and its not being recognized at all. Its as if no disk were inserted. I treat my blu ray's like they were made of highly breakable crystalined structure so I don't think it was damaged.

Its bugged me because it made me wonder how a disk, treated like a god, could suddenly go bad and could that happen to other disks in the collection.

Mike, have you experienced a disk suddenly not being recognized in the PS3?

Thanks,
KCcarl

Actually, yes I have and these dics were My Best Friend's Girl, 3:10 to Yuma, Bride Wars, Donnie Darko. This occurred with the last laser I had.

However, after I replaced my laser, these discs started to work again.

Spoke with Cody from JDElectronics on Monday (7/6/09) and he told me that he couldn't figure out what the prob was with my 60GB PS3 after he fixed the original YLOD problem. Was going to take care of the refund and send my unit back and he said I probably would have better luck with Sony.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, the YLOD was resolved by JDElectronics. Unfortunately, while the XMB comes up and whatnot, the PS3 apparently hangs when attempting to start up a game (via the BD drive or HDD) or videos (via BD/HDD). HDD was backed up and then restored and still same prob. Cody was guessing that something else on the mobo went bad but he wasn't able to track the prob down. So anyways, the unit is on its way back and I will have to contact Sony to see if I have an option with them.

My question is: has anyone gotten grief from Sony on the repair/replacement if the PS3 warranty sticker has been removed/cut? Being that JDElectronics had to go in to fix the YLOD, I was just wondering if Sony will consider that a tampering situation as the JD folks are not authorized Sony repair folks? Sadly worse case scenario will be that if Sony will not fix/replace my unit is that I'm gonna have to do without a PS3 until the newer and hopefully improved slimmer units (rumored) come out.
