As mentioned earlier in the thread, the YLOD was resolved by JDElectronics. Unfortunately, while the XMB comes up and whatnot, the PS3 apparently hangs when attempting to start up a game (via the BD drive or HDD) or videos (via BD/HDD). HDD was backed up and then restored and still same prob. Cody was guessing that something else on the mobo went bad but he wasn't able to track the prob down. So anyways, the unit is on its way back and I will have to contact Sony to see if I have an option with them.

My question is: has anyone gotten grief from Sony on the repair/replacement if the PS3 warranty sticker has been removed/cut? Being that JDElectronics had to go in to fix the YLOD, I was just wondering if Sony will consider that a tampering situation as the JD folks are not authorized Sony repair folks? Sadly worse case scenario will be that if Sony will not fix/replace my unit is that I'm gonna have to do without a PS3 until the newer and hopefully improved slimmer units (rumored) come out.
Since I've started helping people replace their laser, I haven't heard of a single case of Sony refusing to repair a PS3 (as long as you pay them $150).

Granted, if you tried to add 'mods' to it or something thats a different story.

Hey Mike,

Its sounds like you have experienced this on quite a few disks. So, since I have one disk that doesn't work, and thus far no others, I'm assuming you would wait to replace the lazer? I'm not sure what the warranty period is on the PS3, but its much less than a year old.

Would you suggest I send it in for a lazer replacement, do it myself, or just wait for the lazer to go further down the hole?

Well while its still in warranty, I'd contact Sony as its free for them to fix it.

I just bought a new PS3 since mine is dead, and the new one only last a day!! The blu-ray laser is dead!!! No blu-ray is playing! only dvds!! So I got it back to the local store where I bought it, but they don't have any more in store, so they have to order a new one... what a sad week it will be for me...

Is it a locally owned store or could they call other stores to have it delivered?

I think its a really small franchise (4 or 5 store around canada) so I don't know where they come from.

But a bran new dead ps3 kinda make me lose thrust on ps3 quality... my lunch one I can understand, but how bad lucky can I be with another dead one...

Also since my old PS3 is dead from YLOD how can I deactivated it so it doesn't use one of my 5 PSN licences?

Default ps3 red flashing light

update, well Sony is sending me a 60gb model and found no sign of abuse so no charge.
Should get here on Monday according to ups with the dvd that was stuck in the drive in the same box, but when i called up they could not tell me what was wrong with the unit or if it is my original they are sending me back.
I was just concerned because of me using my cc to buy games on the psn and all my game saves. (guess this is my excuse for replaying some of my games!)
well I am impressed with not paying and the fast service, would be nice to know why it died.

Be sure to keep us updated.

Also, I think you should start backing up at least game saves from now on?

I'm going to start doing backups religiously now. A shame that my confidence in the system has been impugned. Bigger shame that the backups take so damned long. Since I have the music, etc archived in other places it'd be nice if it would let me specify what I wanted to back up. The 4-6 hour backup thing means I'll start the backup and then hit the hay, I guess.

Is there a way to get a disc out of a dead PS3 without having to crack it open?

Default ps3 running very loud.

my ps3 is 1.5 years old and tends to run quite loud recently. i mean real loud - like startup level noise throughout its use. i assume it is the fan, but it is really quite loud :-p
we mostly use it for blu-ray and dvd playback...

any thoughts?

I get that during hot weather or when my room gets uncomfortably warm with no breeze.

Personally, I would gut the PS3 and vacuum all the dust in the fan and vents out.

I've been having this problem lately too. Nothing to heinous but it can get really annoying during a quiet scene/part in a game.

Is there anything we should do in terms of cleaning other than shoot some compressed air in the vents or put a vacuum hose up to them?
