I started having an issue with my launch 60gb PS3 last week. It has only done it on occasion, but I suspect it may be the beginning of a more serious problem.

Sometimes the disc will not eject. I can hear it wanting to come out, and sometimes it does a tiny bit and then moves back in. On the last disc I played it took me nearly 15 minutes of trying, when it finally came out.

Additionally, I'm now finding that the audio has gone completely awry. On the EC & SW: Live from Madison Square Gardens Blu-ray I can no longer select the 2.0 PCM track. It defaults back to 5.1. I have not changed any of my settings. Furthermore the audio sounds as if my speakers are blown, and I assure you they are not. It also did this on the John Mayer BD. Both discs are pristene and I have never had this issue in the past.

If anyone could enlighten as to what the problem might be, I would very grateful.

John

PS~ I took out an extended 3-year service plan, so I am still covered.

Hrm....I don't know of any pin-hole (like computer disc drives) that will manually eject it.

Not really anything other then compressed air and a vacuum cleaner short of taking apart the PS3. If you do decide to take apart the PS3 do not vacuum any of the components.

will shooting compressed air into it hurt anything cause i thought about trying it but don't want to mess anything up inside. i usually try to clean mine at least once a week (at least the outside of it).

I shoot compressed air into the PS3 through the vents all the time. I just try to avoid anywhere in the disc drive area. After two plus years I have absolutely no problem with it.

When you get it opened up, it looks more like a design issue. The places some dust collects is crazy. Easy to armchair quarterback it, and easy to see how designers might have missed that in an office environment (much less a clean room). Throw in pets, etc and it becomes easy to see. Biggest problem, design wise, is that there's no easy way to access that, especially not without breaking the warranty sticker and disassembly.

I always loved my VAIO design due to how modular it was (HDD bay has a level and pulls out, so you can add/remove individual drives outside of the entire case, then plug in the whole "module" and reconnect the SATA/IDE cables,e tc). Same for optical drives and peripherals. PS3 wasn't designed to upgrade, of course, but isn't designed to get that air out either.

With my replacement/repair I'll probably try my hand at compressed air and risk it, maybe with a periodic disassembly once the warranty is out. Reflowing business is pretty inexcusible

Default YLOD Update

Repaired my YLOD with Liquid Flux and bending the clamps a little over a month ago.

No issues thus-far. Seems to be running cooler than before, but not sure since I never really checked all that much before. The weather has been extremely hot lately and I've had the PS3 on for a few hours at a time and no issues.

Is there anyone else who has fixed their YLOD and maintained it with no issues thereafter?

On a side note, my power button hasn't worked since reconnecting my PS3. I'm sure it is a loose cable, but wanted to check if anyone knew exactly which cable. The one that goes to the memory cards was definitely out when I reconnected the PS3, so perhaps that one?

Make sure the two things on the left and right are not bent.

Should get here on Monday according to ups with the dvd that was stuck in the drive in the same box, but when i called up they could not tell me what was wrong with the unit or if it is my original they are sending me back.
I was just concerned because of me using my cc to buy games on the psn and all my game saves. (guess this is my excuse for replaying some of my games!)
well I am impressed with not paying and the fast service, would be nice to know why it died.
It would be great if we could get that kind of information from Sony. My guess is that due to the amount of work on the repair/replacement side that the only thing they really are obligated to do is inform you that your PS3 is coming back? I know I received a refurb 60GB from Sony when I sent in my original broken 60GB because the serial number on the replacement one was different from my initial unit. That, and a hidden mark point I placed on my original 60GB unit was not on the replacement one.

Waiting now on my PS3 coffin from Sony so they can fix/replace my 2nd 60GB unit that JDElectronics couldn't fix.

As long as you sign in as yourself on his PS3 and you currently do not have 5 other devices associated with your PSN account, yes.

Default Weird lines IN my games

So I was playing Motorstorm Pacific Rift the other day and there was this weird thick black line jetting out from one of the other vehicles. It was only there from some of the camera views (like if I hit the look back button) and only some of the time. It was weird but I figured just a one time glitch the game is having. Then it happened a couple more times in different places.

Flash forward to yesterday, I finally picked up inFamous (thank you Toys R Us sale) and these weird lines were in it too!!

I was doing the mission from the demo where you have to protect the food thing they drop from all the reapers and when I was in that little industrial square with all the palets and everything there were tons of black lines coming out from the edges of the objects.

The best way I can describe is it's almost like someone was playing cats cradle (the thing girls do with the string in their hands) and one hand was all the objects in the the game, and the other hands were off screen pulling them tight.... if that makes any sense.

These lines are IN the game so it's not my tv or anything. It doesn't bother me too much now but I dunno if it's some really weird thing that could be going wrong with my PS3 or something.

Sorry for the long wordy post but if anyone has seen or heard about this please let me know what it is, and what I should or shouldn't do about it. Thanks so much!

Good luck to you, sir. I shouldn't whine too much I suppose. It lasted me more than 2 years so at least I got some life out of it. I tried to get an extended warranty and interestingly enough, the folks at Sony told me there were no warranties available for PS3s. I wonder if that was true at the time, or if some CSRs were just having fun with me?...

Scratch that. I think I just got YLOD again. PS3 shut itself off and I immediately cut the main power. Not going to attempt to turn it on again until tomorrow.

Being realistic, it's probably YLOD again. I don't believe anyone has been able to successfully revive their PS3 for an indefinite amount of time after YLOD. I used liquid flux, bent the clamps, etc... etc... It all seems to just extend the unavoidable.

Default PS3 is not starting

Suddenly my PS3 is not starting today.
I unplugged the power and re-plugged but still it is not starting . The red light is keep blinking.
It is 16 months old and i guess it is out of warranty. The usage of PS3 is very minimal but not sure why suddenly not starting.

Any helps would be highly appreciated..

This might be game specific, but it's really annoying. I was trying to play a PSN game the other day and it said there was an update. So I press 'OK' and then the PS3 reboots itself immediately--without updating. it does this everytime and now I can't play that game any more.

If you have YLOD, chances that after fixing it it will come back is sky high. For the most part, its worth doing just to backup your saves, de-activate your accounts, but it shouldnt be used as a long term fix since they usually just die again.

Agreed. I did the reflow to backup my data. Now, my YLOD is back again and I want a new system. I contacted Sony and they told me there's a good chance they will NOT fix my system because it has been opened before. Is this what everyone is told but they send the system in anyway and get it replaced?

I am concerned that I will be sending in my PS3 for nothing. Does anyone have any experience sending in a PS3 after they have opened it and tampered with it?
