just a quick edit in that post i meant to say 100 games because most game saves are usually only like 500KB and some only go up to like 2MB

Yeah I have a weird habit of deleting my posts when I edit them but I have noticed that once in awhile I won't see a post I made but this time it was me.

I got the YLOD last night too. Mike the first link on the tips to fix the YLOD of death isn't working. It just re-directs you to the same page.

How trustworthy is the guy that fixes the YLOD on eBay?

It doesn't seem too bad. i was going to fix mine myself, but watching the video gave me second thoughts. taking it apart and reflowing looks pretty easy, its just putting it back together(correctly) that has me worried.

Just a question, because I have a 60gb too, how long was it previously "On" before this happened? How long was your PS3 playing games or watching dvd's/Blu-Rays/or simply just on? Estimate if you can.

Was it in a very tight space, with miminum air circulation, was it next to a heat source?

What happens if you don't have the original drive any longer? Mine has a 120gb in it and the original 40gb is long gone. If you send it back to Sony, what occurs?

Just curious although mine is currently ok *knocks on wood*.

I am pretty sure the manual suggests you keep the original HDD to send it in. Not certain though, but my 60GB HDD is sitting neatly wrapped up on a shelf just in case.

It probably does. It would require me to read it though. Sure, it's my fault, but I was just wondering what would occur. What happens if that drive goes bad? I mean, it's a HDD- they are prone to failure.

Fixed!

So far that guy is very trustworthy and though not 100% fix rate, but doesn't fully charge you if it doesn't work.

I've got 2 60GB launch machines. A bit of compressed air to blow out the dust and its good as new. Although my USA machine is a bit louder than my UK one.

I don't even have aircon in my house, just the window.

I have 150+ blu rays so they both get a good work out. Most problems with PS3's are user error or lack of looking after them imo. I've not seen a dead PS3 yet.

It's possible if you send it to them without the drive they'll send one back without one, then just put yours back in (which will no doubt be formatted once you do). My 60gb has been re-housed and is now a portable usb drive.

My 80GB was doing this before it was moved to its new location(on top of the entertainment center). I also cleaned out all the vents and have never had any other issues.

Which video did you watch?

My brother played Burnout Paradise for about an hour and then about 30mins later I turned it on but it didn't work.

My PS3 has enough space on the back and the side ventilation, it's been there for two years so it's hard to say what caused this. It is however next to an AV receiver which I bought about 3 months ago.

I'm going to vacuum out the dust near the vents and see if it does anything. If everything else fails I will send it to this guy. Does he send you a box like Sony, although I doubt he does, or do you send it in the original PS3 box?

Operation: Vacuum the vents was a fail.

Is there a video on fixing the YLOD?

I don't know why I came in here but the hypochondriac in me is now worried about my own PS3. It may just be me but lately, my PS3 has sounded a little hot. I've had it for 2 and a half years. Should I be performing some regularly scheduled maintenance on it or what?

I wish I had opened mine up and blown out some of the caked up dust. Not sure if that was the cause or not, but certainly didn't help.
