If the PS3 hasn't had a recent firmware update, you MUST connect it via the composite cables first.
Step 1: Connect the PS3 via composite (red, white, yellow) cables to your TV to a standard composite input on the TV. Step 2: Disconnect the HDMI cable. Step 3: Turn on the PS3 but hold down the power button and wait for the 3 beeps. Step 4: Turn on your TV and switch to whatever input the composite from the PS3 is connected to. Step 5: Turn on a SixAxis or DualShock 3 controller and navigate the Cross Media Bar to the left until you reach Settings. Step 6: Find Display Settings. Step 7: Connect your HDMI cable to your PS3 and TV, and make note of what input it is on your TV. Step 8: On the Display Settings of the Cross Media Bar, set it to output via HDMI. Step 9: Immediately switch the TV to the HDMI input. You should get an image at this point. Confirm the change. If you don't within 30 seconds, it will automatically revert back to composite output. If this doesn't work, post back and we can troubleshoot from there. |

If you bought the PS3 from ebay, it is completely possible that someone sold you a lemon with a bad video processor...this is exactly what my unit does after it gets hot. Yours just might be broken from a video standpoint.
Mine will power on and hear sound and it operates fine but the video doesn't come on unless the unit is cold (like 65° from sitting under an a/c vent) and even then will only show video for 10 minutes or so. Putting a disc in gets an automatic black screen with red, green and yellow dots. I hate to say it, but I think you've been taken by the ebay'er (unless your item is brand new) I'm curious, how much did you pay? |

For those of you who read about my PS3 problem a few pages back I just wanted to report I did receive my PS3 back from Sony yesterday. I sent it in because I bent the HDMI gold pin connectors and couldn't get the HDMI port to work. I don't know if it's mine or someone else's but I did get the same 60GB PS2 compatible version back. The HDD was wiped but oh well. It took about two weeks from when I first called to actually getting it back.
It was a fast and easy process all the way. |

Mine isn't yellow lighting of death yet, but i'm getting weird graphical glitches in a couple of games now, Think I should apply some of that stuff to the cpu and gpu... I've already taken it apart, and I don't think I need to reflow, didn't know if that paste could be causing my issues or not.

Unfortunately Mines on the 6th YLOD. The last time I fixed it and put it back together it wouldnt read Blu-rays. Then it dies while my wife and kid were watching Toy Story. I need to read back thru and see where this flux stuff is. But if my Blu-ray laser is dead Ima really go beserk. Eagerly awaiting the cash to buy a slim. Surely there'll be less hassle with it... Right? Guys? lol

I mean no offense, and this isn't directed at you personally, but when I read about people who are on their 3rd, 4th, 6th or 10th PS3 (or, even with its well-publicized fail rates, their 10th or 14th Xbox 360) it makes me think that the cause of their issue is environmental, and not faulty hardware.
The odds against this happening to one person that many times as a result of faulty hardware are so astronomically high it's impossible. |

Just to add on to what you said.
The fixes that they are doing are not necessarily what the PS3 needs in order to be fixed, but only documentation from other people that have done which had similar issues as them. Also they are not licensed Sony PS3 repairmen with instructions from Sony on how to repair the machine with the proper tools and equipment. |
