Yep that's what I though, (i'm working on the kitchen table with a table cloth...)
..

After doing the reflow, I got white speckles on the screen and my controllers wouldn't hook up to the system, and i think my USB's died...

Talked to the youtube guy, he said reflow again, and spend more time on the RSX, and make sure no compound got on anything else, as it could be blocking the USB's. putting it back together right now to try again.. if this doesn't work.. I don't think sony will take it back.. lol, so i might just get a slim...

Just be very careful. If a tiny tiny little bit of static discharges onto the motherboard or CPU/GPU say bye bye to PS3. Discharge yourself by touching a peice of metal every now and then.

Ok, loads up and black screen with white sparkles, but i get sound and the controllers now work... power button doesn't going to fix that, and see if a hard reset will fix the ps3... i think i could deal with white pixels/dead pixel look as long as I could back up my ps3, and deactivate accounts, and then send it off and get it fixed...

Now should I do JD electronics, or have Sony do it?

PS3 is officially dead 3am cst October 10th, 2009.... Reflow killed it, it at least kind of worked before.. I just lost everything, i can't even get it on to backup now... i'm so pissed... hopefully i can come up with something tomorrow..

Hey,

If Sony accepts your PS3 after you've tried those repairs... Let me know.

I assumed that in order for Sony to repair you PS3 the warranty stickers would have to still be intact.

Anyways... I used to work in a plant that manufactured circuit boards and we would re-flow solder sometimes too but in special ovens. I think it's great that the information is there but you have to figure that type of repair is sketchy at best.

I saw a youtube video of using a sata to usb cable backing up a fried ps3 to a comp then moving it back to a new ps3. And I feel your pain.. had a 60gb that burnt through lasers. Finally broke down and got a 80gb. Did lose my Killzone game though, they don't let you back that up... no way I'm going to try and get back to where I was on elite again. Though honestly I was stuck on that damn train and don't think I was ever going to beat that level

same here. please let me know if sony will take it in for repair or a switcheroo. I tried to reflow as well. It was successful. No sparkles or anything. perfect function, but it died after 2 weeks.

Someone else here mentioned sending it in to sony, but I am wondering as well if they will accept it after I have tried the reflow solder instructions. do you think they would know if I have done that? otherwise, I had to take it apart a second time after it died so that I could remove the movie i was watching. at least i got that out.

I know that Sony accepted my PS3 after JDElectronics was unable to fix a secondary issue and JDE returned the PS3 to me (JDE fixed the YLOD with the reflow fix then another issue sprung up). The warranty sticker was gone and Sony still took it. Now, I don't know if it was because whatever the secondary issue that came up didn't involve the Sony reps having to go so far as to look at JDE's attempts at a reflow or not so I wouldn't take my experience as the official Sony stance.

On the follow-up, my PS3 has bit it for the second time with....a YLOD. I was still covered under the 90-day warranty from when I sent in the PS3 to be fixed by Sony after JDE was unable to get it working and I should be getting a coffin pretty shortly to hopefully have them fix it. Sadly, I suspect I may end up getting another refurb 60GB (there goes my saves on my 250GB HDD) but I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

If the PS3 and not the HDD crapped out why can't you just get the HDD out and keep the saves?

because the hard drives are encrypted where you can't get the saves off of them, from what i've been told, and if you stick it in another ps3, it tries to format the HDD.

Exactly. And if Sony sees that a reflow had already been attempted before on my PS3 then they may just say screw it and just send me a brand new refurb instead of fixing the unit I send it. Blah. Oh well

Like i said request to keep ur same ps3, if the mother board is dead, all they have to do is switch it out, and it wouldn't be that damn difficult to do...

I miss my Ps3.

I just told the Ol' Lady, "Babe, we should watch TDK on..." But before I finished the sentence, I remembered that my Ps3 is off to be fixed. I got sad and said, "Nevermind, I forgot it's broken." She laughed at me!

The sadness of not having a working PS3 can't be described. It has to be experienced to be fully understood.

I even borrowed a Samsung BDP1000 from a friend so I'm still able to watch some of my Blus but losing a PS3 is in some ways worse than when I lost a pet. PS3 is, crazy as it may sound, a bringer of lots of fun in my house.

I completely feel with ya ^^

when ours died the second time, I was crushed....and so was my wife.

she said, well, guess we're going to have to get one of those slims then.

(inside i was pumping my fist, but still, it's the 60 gigger we're talking about here)

she's a major fan of the ps3. loves rock band and whatnot.

I think i'll send it in to sony to get a replacement. i mean, for all it does, even a refurb could probably get 400 bucks sold because of it's BC/SD card readers/4 usb hubs/SACD playback and all that good stuff.

maybe once a couple of months goes by and i save up some extra scratch for the 150 i'll send it in.

Default Just got the yellow light of death!

My 60 gig just died. Earlier in the week I lost my original username and all my trophies because my ps3 was acting up. So I guess I can either go with a slim or send it in to get fixed.

Does anyone know if all of my pictures and music will still be on my hard drive when I get it back ?(if I send it in)

Also there is a game still in the system.

Trophies are not gone only the saved data is and everything else is erased when you send it to Sony to fix it.

Well to be more accurate your username still exists and you can go back to it by either getting a slim PS3 or getting it fix by just doing the normal sign in with your email and password.
