I've seen some video tutorials on youtube about how to clean the blu-ray lens in a playstation 3. Basically take it apart and use a cotton swab and some cleaning solution on the lens.

1. Has anyone here tried this?
2. Any sugguestions about what cleaning solution to use? I tried radio shack and they didn't have anything that looked appropriate.
3. Am I insane to touch the lens at all?

I just bought a used 40GB. It's out of warranty (I checked with Sony). Anyway, it played fine for the first three days, but now it keeps freezing up. It plays DVD/CD fine, but games aren't working (I tried two different games). It's really clean inside from looking in the vents. I tried the fan-blow-out function but it didn't help.

Thanks for any feedback.
Use rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab (Q-Tip). Lightly clean it.

Angry No luck cleaning lens

Cleaned the lens last night and am still having the same problem. I can play a game for about 1 or 2 minutes, but then it freezes up. Sometimes it won't even read the disk in the XMB, it's hit-and-miss. DVDs play fine. I haven't tried any blu-ray movies. This really blows; my PS1 and PS2 both lasted for several years both still work perfectly. I realize blu-ray is a different animal, but this is absurd. Well, guess it's time to replace the laser....

(I've reformatted twice, updated firmware, deleted game files over and over again, tried two different games, and cleaned the lens...still nothing.)

Sounds like the laser needs to be replaced then.

You can either do it yourself or send it into Sony to do it.

Hey guys, I have a launch 60G that got the YLOD a month or so ago. I fixed it myself, and it worked fine for a while. Now it died again, so I want to send it in to Sony and pay the $150. I called them and they told me if I repaired it already they would deny service. Anyone have any luck with getting Sony to repair a already worked on unit?

Countless people have had Sony repair their PS3 that they did the reflow on already. I suggest calling back and hopefully you'll get someone else. Make sure that you let them know that you are willing to pay the $150 and you are trying to convince them its still under warranty.

They said that once an unlicensed technician works on the PS3 they will most likely deny service on the unit. I asked him if I didn't tell them that I opened it would they fix it, he said they will see that it was worked on and most likely deny service on it. I clearly told them I would pay the $150 repair. He said it didn't matter.

I guess I'll just call up and tell them it just doesn't work, and see what happens.

Hey,

So... I recently got the YLOD on my launch day 60GB system which I had extended warranty on.

My warranty company paid to send my PS3 to Sony for exchange.

I tried to have the old one de-activated but now they say that's a one time only thing so wait till I've used up all 5 possible systems to request de-activation.

On the other hand... They say activation for the Video store is one machine only and they could de-activate my old PS3 for Video. I mentioned I only ever downloaded stuff from the Video store that happened to be free but they said that in that case my old system was activated and would be de-activated for me.

Then... I got an email from Sony saying as a goodwill measure I could re-download anything I had previously from the video store and to make sure when I tried I used a wired instead of a wireless connection. I really don't know what that email is supposed to mean but I guess I'll log into the video store later and see what's up.

Several other people have done it and had no issue.

Default Techie Question: Static route on PS3?

Hi all,

Does anyone know if it's possible to configure a static route on the PS3?

Obviously the Default Gateway needs to point out to the internet, however, I have another one internal network where my other devices sit (including TVersity).

I really don't want to put everything on the PS3 network, so I need to route to other internal networks for the PS3 to see my TVserity Media server.

Any ideas anyone?

Go to network settings -> Internet connection settings -> chose yes -> chose custom -> chose what you have wired/wireless -> chose manual settings -> chose your speed and duplex(I just do auto-detect) -> chose manual... this will get you to a screen you can set IP addresses yourself.

Hope that helps.

He said they will know it was worked on even if I didn't tell them. I guess it just depends on the guy that opens it. If he feels like denying it, I'm screwed. If not, I'm un-screwed.

How would you be screwed? Worst case senario they deny service and refund your money.

I have one . My 60giger burnt through lasers. Got it fixed by Sony once for free, fixed it not long after by replacing the laser myself until finally the 3rd laser fail I broke a tiny wire on the BD drive. I'm not trying to say they are unreliable or anything. I got a bunk 60giger. Anyway after that 3rd fail and me breaking the wire I just went out and bought a 80 from BB with the 2 year warranty. Over a year now no problems.

Hey guys, I know we talked about the ability to have 5 PS3's activated under one PSN ID but it looks like you can only have one for 'VIDEO' Activation?!

Tried to DL a trailer last night and it told me I am already using my 1 activation for video.

Not sure what I can do. I have a bricked PS3 60Gb and its hogging my activation. If I call can they deactivate the bricked 60?
