Because you changed the hdd to a new one. When you put in the 300GB drive that became the systems hard drive, then when you put the 60 back in it was a "new" drive and hence needed to be re-formatted. If you had just taken the 60 out, and put it back in it would've been fine.

Looks like as soon as you boot the system with a new drive in it and the PS3 recognizes this, they are "paired". So even if you cancel the reformat, you still removed the old one from the pairing, so to speak.

I guarantee you that simply removing and putting back the EXACT SAME drive will not result in a forced format.

Haha, ok I'll put up my house. Anyone care to match? I was interested in expanding my property ownership anyways.

Every time I have taken out my hard drive and put it back in, it has never asked to reformat it. It should only reformat if a different hard drive gets inserted from the previous one.

Hey Mike,

Have you fixed your most recent problem? Also, may I ask are you still on your original console after all these fixes because you've had it for a LONG time?

Hope your system is doing well and I hope my system can recover from this.

Just got mine back from the local shop. Sure enough the paste stuff had pretty much disintegrated. He said there was a small amount of warping on the board or something too. :P Works okay now. Put the HD back in, ran a backup first thing. Everything seems okay for now. It was a pretty cheap repair and a quick turnaround too. Hope it holds out through the holidays at least. Glad to have it back...

Adam

Yup, the reflow as well as replaced the thermal paste (used arctic silver) seems to have fixed the issue so far. I've played the God of War Collection on it for quite a few hours before I left town and had zero issue. Also I watched the movie UP on it with no issue either.

I am still using my original Motorstorm 80GB Bundle w/ BC.

Like someone else said, reflowing the chips does not necessarily fix the YLOD issue, but does fix it majority of the time. I've read that just reseating the hard drive sometimes does the trick (ie, unscrewing it and take it out and put it back in). Also, someone also mentioned that replacing the power supply could fix it too.

I was actually really shocked that my system started to work after I reflowed it. I watched those videos and used the heat gun for the same amount of time that he did as if I was watching a mirror. I used a heat gun that was the same temperature that his was 700 degrees (well, mine was 750, but I just held it like half an inch farther away, lol).

That makes sense, trying to re-engage a HDD once its tried to pair the system with another will attempt a format, need to remember that.

Now if they could only get an OS that could bloody read the PS3 OS format then we could just hook the HDDs to our computers and backup up that way!

I hope it'll last longer, but I'm a bit of pessimist. Especially after this happened. Thought it wouldn't happen to my PS3 since I always took care of it and didn't let it overheat or anything. Believe, I'll be quite happy if it lasts a long while. It'd just royally suck if it dies during vacation/gaming time.

So I'm a little ticked right now... it finally happened to me, just to get some clarification but I think my laser died ; When I put in a disc it is no longer recognized... I did a full system restore and it worked for 20 mins then my system froze up again, and it no longer reads any kind of disc ; Bad laser? I'm attempting to get Sony to fix it for free ( I'm out of warranty,) so far I've gotten a free 3rd party game out of them but I'm not giving in... a third manager is giving me a call back on Friday ;

Yeah it probably only worked for 20 minutes because you gave it a break.

Definitely sounds like a laser issue.

Thanks for your help Mike, I've seen your videos on youtube and they are great, I can't decide now if I just want to sell this one as is and get a slim, or just try to replace the laser myself... Guess I'll wait till Friday until I speak to Sony and go from there ; Happy Thanksgiving!

Default Question?

First Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Last night I was playing Boarderlands, and my PS3 completly shut off, and went to a red flashing light. I thought that meant it was over heating. I let it cool down and triend to turned on the green light came on, and it looked like the HDD light flashed, but the PS3 was oddly quite. Then it flashed a blue then yellow really quick and went back to flashing red. Same thing this morning. Is my PS3 is dead?

Yeah I just wanted some confirmation that what I thought was true.

Oh well I will have to try and swoop up on a slim. It just sucks that all my game saves and stuff is gone. Is there a way to remove the hard drive and hook it up to a computer and get the info off of it?

Also if I have a bigger hard drive sitting here should I just pop that in my new PS3 when it gets here?
