A buddy of mine had that problem.

He took it apart, cleaned it (dust), reapplied the heatsing for the cpu with fresh heatsink stuff... and it worked.

The problem is he had the same problem about 3 weeks later. He ended up buying a new one.

When they say "it only does everything" I don't think they were referring to the "69gig blinking red light" manuver. You may be able to hold Sony to it though.

Cool

This just happened to me yesterday. Mine won't even stay on for more than a second, but it is an original 80g and was used almost every day. Cleaning may be a temporary solution, but I think we both need new systems

Check out the Tips, Tricks and Fixes sticky above. There is information on several known problems and ways to fix them (if any).

I just had this happen to my original 60 gig last friday as well. Long story short, your screwed. Maybe it will work if you get the reflow but it would prolly be best to go ahead and invest in a new slim.

Just happened to me a few weeks ago. I reflowed it, but who knows how long it will last.

Mine started blinking red - worked of and on for a few more days before never turning on again (I was just hooking up the external to backup my game saves - and it died, never to return.)

Ended up getting a slim - but I'm still a bit annoyed that a $600 player only lasted 3-4 years. My computer and PS2 from over a decade a go still work fine.

If you are sure the HDD is clicking, then you may just have a dead drive. Try taking it out and turn the PS3 on. The OS isn't stored on the HDD so if the drive is the problem, it should still boot and tell you to put in a hardrive or something.

My PS3 got the dreaded YLOD so I need to extract some photos from the hard-drive. Can someone please instruct the easiest way to go about this? Thanks!

That sucks that you just ordered all that stuff to fix it. Oh well return it.

Hopefully my repair job goes a little better.

My 60GB PS3 failed in October. I had a 3 year warranty so I got it replaced for free which was nice though it took my warranty company a month.

Anyways... My warranty company wound up paying sony for an exchange and it was $149. I think that Sony will still do out of warranty exchange of 60GB PS3's for $149 and if this "new" one fails I'll try to do that next time.

For $149 ... It's definitely worth it for me to get a refurbished 60GB. I hope they still offer up exchanges of 60GB for a long time.

-Brian

p.s. Trying the reflow repair isn't something I would do.

You won't be able to get anything off of the hard drive from another machine if thats what you are asking due to encryption.

However, you can following the steps to fix the YLOD in the OP. Once fixed, you can run a backup or transfer to a USB device.

I tried the repair and made it worse by permanently damaging the power supply. I'm getting a new PS3 and I know I won't be able to transfer any media directly to it, but there has to be another way to retrieve some photos from my old PS3 hard-drive, right?

Unfortunately not known. Only a repair on the original. How did you damage the power supply?

Might be possible to crack the encryption on the drive, but good luck with that.

How did you manage to permanently damage your power supply?

The only thing you do with your power supply is remove the screws and tabs.

I can't put the PS3 drive into a notebook PC or an WD external drive case?

I damaged it while attempting to pull out the cable connecting the power supply. It wouldn't come out so I pulled harder and harder until I yanked out the connecting base and the little wires connecting the base. So actually the power supply is probably fine, it just can't connect to the system now.
