Wonder if this means we will get a 4K UHD release of Top Gun because the original Blu ray PQ was pretty bad the AQ was awesome.

I thought Allied was a bad Casablanca homage, I hesitate to call 13 Hours a good film but it's just very mediocre (which is high praise to Bay from me), Silence is one of the finest masterpieces of the century so far, and Arrival wasn't a flop; in fact, it was a major hit (it made $100 million domestically on a $47 million budget).

Too bad John Stockwell's stock as a director never got any better. He could've been like Shane Black -- in the first movie, directing a sequel.

Right that Arrival wasn't a flop, just mentioning it as an example of a good one. I liked Allied quite a bit, especially the first half when it was more of a spy thriller. I thought it had a lot more in common with The English Patient than Casablanca, though, aside from actually taking place in Casablanca lol. Also enjoyed the hell out of 13 Hours. And yeah, Silence is amazing.

The climax was like an even darker version of the Casablanca climax.

Please don't mention The English Patient. The fact that beat Fargo for Best Picture makes me as mad as the time Dances with Wolves beat Goodfellas for the same prize. The Oscars really are BS.

Yeah that's a good point.

I love The English Patient. Not nearly as much as Fargo, but I don't begrudge it winning. Dances With Wolves is another question entirely though; had no business winning, let alone over Goodfellas.

Joseph Kosinski will direct Top Gun: Maverick

Quote:
Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski will officially helm Top Gun: Maverick. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer announced the news on Twitter while also revealing the sequel is set to hit theaters on July 12, 2019.
Kosinski was reportedly the number one directorial choice for Paramount and Skydance Pictures. The filmmaker previously worked with Tom Cruise on the 2013 sci-fi film Oblivion, and Cruise has apparently wanted to make another film with Kosinski ever since.

Earlier last month, Cruise discussed the tone of Top Gun: Maverick, saying the sequel is "going to be a competition film like the first one, and it's going to be in the same vein and the same tone as the first," while also being "a progression for Maverick."

Val Kilmer has also expressed interest in reprising his role as Iceman from the original movie, but there's no word yet if he'll return.

A great choice! Kosinski has done some killer work behind the camera with Arron Legacy and Oblivion. I think he'll be able to make a great film.

Tron and Oblivion did have some nice aerial sequences, but they're both pretty-but-vapid movies. Not the original Top Gun was Shakespeare or anything, but I dunno, I'm not crazy about him.

I agree. I like his aesthetic a lot, but storywise, his work is meh.

In a new series of photos featured in the London Daily Mail, Cruise is shown co-piloting a chopper along with someone is presumably a trainer. The photos were taken at an unidentifed location.

I haven't seen Oblivion, but I enjoy Tron: Legacy a great deal. I was still hoping Ridley Scott would helm the film as a tribute to his brother, but Kosinski sounds good, too. I really want them to get as many of the original cast back as possible, because this could easily be Independence Day: Resurgence kind of bad, otherwise...

No matter how you cut it this film will never live up to it's predecessor.

I think it depends on the kind of story they want to tell, and whether any of the new characters are as memorable as the original ones.

Time and place mean just as much....Cold War, 80s Ronald Reagan, F14 Tomcats....can't be replaced. Not to mention sequels and prequels made after so many years usually never pan out. I think Blade Runner is going to be a huge letdown as well. Once you go beyond 15 years or more what's the point?

His "Blue" duology (Blue Crush / Into the Blue) is a guilty pleasure of mine.

How about a F-22 Raptor vs. a Sukhoi Su-35 in Russia to prevent hypersonic ICBM. BTW, we're in the age of hypersonic airplanes and hypersonic ICBMs.

Russia... I'm tired of that storyline.

What we need is a CHINA antagonist... you know the real world tensions in the S. China Sea right !!! (But the China masters would threaten nasty theater sanctions for all US films, if that movie was made, what with the movie industry being a Global market now...)

But, I'll settle for North Korea.
