Thumbs down Blu-rays are great but packaging is ugly!!

As a home theater and film enthusiast, I'm very excited about the new possibilites Blu Ray Disc offers when it comes to sound and image quality.

However, the only thing that stops me from starting to collect Blu Rays big time is the packaging. Most DVDs come in nice packaging with Special Editions and most Blu Rays so far look cheap with that blue plastic slips. A superior format should also LOOK superior and more exclusive. There are only a few exceptions like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" which in my opinion is one of the few discs worth buying so far.

Now that it has become evident that Blu Ray will be the new Home Entertainment format there is no need anymore to advertise the format with slogans like "Beyond High Definition" on the cover. The Blu Ray logo should be sufficient by now.

As long as DVD Special Editions and packaging looks nicer in my collection than Blu Rays I will not buy them - even though I would love to...

What are your thoughts on the packaging?

Andreas from Salzburg, Austria

You make a fair argument. But i kinda like the less is more point of view. I think the cases are perfect. The artwork is generally good, and the uniformity looks good as I'm starting my collection. They have a superior product, so there is no need to try and over do it.

That's my thing, too. I really like the uniformity. All those subtle differences between DVD cases. (One's slightly wider than another even though they are both single discs, just a bit taller or shorter, some having those locking flaps, etc) makes things look a little disorganized and ugly, IMHO.

You will quickly find that the people on this site prefer a pretty picture to a pretty box on their shelf.

I personally did refuse to buy DVDs that came in those dreadful snapper cases, but I'm fine with the Blu cases and hope we don't start seeing a bunch of crappy non-matching cases for Blu

I was actually a little disappointed when I got Lost and found out it came in a box around the case. It just doesn't look right on the shelf.

I like Plastic cases more than Steelbooks etc.

The Plastic cases are robust, lighter, you can´t scratch them. and they look better. (IMHO)

I´m more pissed about the covers itself sometimes...
But no big deal...

You should just ditch the box. The cas inside looks just as nice and is the same size as everything else on the shelf.

I like the cases. Everthing is the same size and they take up much less space then DVD cases. The artwork is fine with me too. When they are all stacked on the shelves you cant see the art anyway. Even if you could I still think they look fine.

I like the cases but it's funny that you mention this though. Others have complained about the special packaging of titles like Close Encounters b/c it sticks out from the rest of the cases. So, it doesn't look like they'll be able to please everyone. I don't feel strongly about it either way. I'm fine with the standard blue cases and I'm fine with special packaging. Although, if forced to pick, I'd probably side with whatever takes up the least amount of space.

I agree (weird)

The BDA can bring on the slim transparent Blu-Ray slip cases and keep them that way. They should concentrate on lowering the MSRP to an average 19.99$ rather then waisting time designing different elaborate cases for every movie.

This is NOT the fashion industry... it's ALL about high def picture and sound.

P.S. I like the standard Blu-Ray cases better then the standard DVD cases: they take less space and the transparent Blue plastic looks better then the cheaper looking standard opaque black plastic of DVD cases.

I prefer Blu-Ray cases to DVD because they make your library look very slick and uniform. Some DVDs have slip covers, some don't, some are snap cases, some aren't. The thickness of some DVD cases also seems to vary.

With all Blu cases being the same except for a few miniscule things, I really like how my growing library looks. The cleanliness and uniformity makes me want to go buy even more just to push more DVDs off.

I like the Blu cases, and the color catches the eye on the store shelves. I'd be upset if they ever started making them different now that I've got a collection going.

I agree.
I think that the cases are better looking then any of the standard DVD cases that i have owned. I do not think the cases are sub-par but exceeds the old format.
