Looks like this strike will be over soon as more and more companies are reaching deals with WGA

Thankfully!

And to think all this is about DOWNLOADS, of all things.

Penton, any input on the WGA strike is always highly appreciated.

PM

While at CES I noticed Underworld Evolutions on HDDVD in the HDDVD booth. I was told that SPE does not hold world rights on the Underworld series and that these discs were imports. I thought that was a prized franchise for SPE and was surprised to hear this, any thoughts?

Also at CES there was virtually no one in the HDDVD booth while the Bluray booth next door was filled with people practically dancing on the pirate ship.

It shows that alot of you folks are indeed film aficionados and have their priorities in order.

I haven’t commented as yet upon that tragedy as it is quite depressing to me and many others. Suffice to say that as an actor he never shied away from challenging roles and his performance in Brokeback Mountain was fabulous. I also loved him in The Patriot.

For those inclined to such things, say a prayer for Matilda.
It was truly a tragedy but my favorite work from Heath Ledger was the short lived TV series called "ROAR". For those with Netflix give it a try it was all shot in the forest of Ireland

I absolutely loved Roar as well - it saddened me that it was so short lived.

i agree with you on the Harley guys and their loud pipes, they are to loud. but loud pipes do save lives, as they let the other motorists around you know your there, with the stock muffler you could barley hear my kawi, and if the stereo was on in the car next to me, they didn't even know i was there half the time, which caused several people to almost run me off the road or side swipe me, but with my akrapovic evo system its loud but not obnoxious like a Harley, and i have not had very many incidents with other motorists trying to kill me unknowingly.

i rock an Arai RX7 Corsair McCoy Corsa replica so i agree with you there as well.

speaking of motor vehicles, with the new more compact blue laser drive for BD, we might be able to upgrade our car systems sooner then anticipated. i am hoping they will be affordable by end of next year so when BD Audio disks take off i will be ready

And finally a question for PM since paidgeek is away, i have been noticing more surveys online about what the consumer would want in BD audio, do you have a time-frame on how far out these are as i am sure those of us interested in high end car audio would like to know so we don't blow $800+ on a soon to be outdated dvd navigation system if a comparable Blu ray counterpart is just around the corner. I am not asking for specific models or price points, just if these are coming out to the mainstream market in the next year or two.

thanks
anthony

Does it make any sense at all to spend any money during the "slow" purchasing season? I'd think what the BDA would be most worried about would be the holiday season 2008. If HD DVD hardware keeps selling at a 90-10 disadvantage for the next 9 months, Paramount and Universal will have gone neutral long before it's critically important.

As Penton has said, it's going to happen. It's a matter of time. Right now I guess they're all trying to save some face before the inevitable, and sell off as much HD DVD stuff as they're able while it still has some value. Just the costs of the disks on the shelves right now, at $3 or whatever a pop for materials, would be enough for them to get out slowly. As long as they continue to proclaim HD DVD viable, there is a segment of the population out there who will continue to support them and clear off those shelves.

It'd be interesting to know the production runs planned for spring HD DVD exclusives v/s their pre-Warner runs.

It'd also be very interesting to learn whether Toshiba is continuing to order parts to produce HD DVD players.

Oddly enough it was actually filmed in Queensland Austrailia and some in New Zealand, but a really really good show.

I would like to come back to you regarding the Disney employee posting here. Since I am having difficulties in obtaining a corrected replacment version of the first Pirates movie (framing error), I would like to know if he might be able to help. If so, I would be grateful if you (or anybody else) could get me in contact with him.

I would have to chime in there. Since my COTBP was an import there is no way for me to get the corrected version. Amazon.com doesn't know which version they have and Disney refuses to replace the disc for foreigners. Any help would be appreciated.

PM/Max,

Any truth to Sony discontinuing the 80G PS3 and what will happen to the lineup? Will we stay with only one PS3?

Followup Question. If this is just Best Buy acting on its own, do they carry enough weight to get Sony to create a SKU more to its liking?

Come on who is it you support, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal, maybe Man City, lol.

Ok, back on topic to Blu-ray, this is Penton man's thread after all.

I got some PM’s asking more about a post I made a few days ago-
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=422

specifically regarding what I thought of as HDCAM SR and D5 tape as sources (both being compressed video tape formats [Audio info and metadata is uncompressed] ).
I think I addressed this on one of the previous Insider’s Threads back before the high-def format war was over but, regardless, these are my thoughts.

Both are extremely portable sources but, D5 seems more fragile and should be packed more carefully, IMO.
I think that HDCAM SR is technically superior in several respects. Firstly, in regards to video rate to tape, HDCAM SR has a higher bitrate (440 Mbps) compared to D5 (~270 Mbps). But probably more important esp. in regards to practicality is that HDCAM SR has superior multigenerational performance and image manipulation as in color grading. Plus, D5 has more reliability problems than HDCAM SR which makes it more of a pain in the arse to work with. It’s not that uncommon to experience missed frames upon playback which necessitates rewinding and playback again, if indeed, you can ever recover them.

So, in essence………..
1. HDCAM SR
2. D5

and then a way distinct third would be HDCAM.

OK, let me save everybody a couple dozen posts and finish this so the next time people see this thread is updated it's real news:

All my bags are packed I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin' it's early morn
The taxi's waitin' he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing
Every place I go, I'll think of you
Every song I sing, I'll sing for you
When I come back, I'll bring your wedding ring

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Close your eyes I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times, I won't have to say

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
