Penton is this the case - or is the Ultraviolet copy always a version that is downloaded/streamed and that it won't just let you copy the normal highest quality Blu-ray video files from the Blu-ray disc?

It's probably not the case, since that's not how I intended that statement to be interpreted. Like I said in the end of that same post, UV doesn't appear to have a provision for moving the actual Blu-ray encode you have on disc around a network. The UV copy has to be downloaded as far as I know.*

My point was that people who want a Blu-ray quality physical copy with their UV account should probably buy the Blu-ray.

I am referring to the future more than now. After all, no HD source (high quality) if bluray is obsolete in the next few years, is the ultimate kick in the teeth.
1. Streaming services already offer 1080p options so there needs to be an uncompressed 1080p master for them. VUDU already makes a lot of noise about preserving film grain in their 1080p streaming encodes. By the time Blu-ray dies, we could have 4k download options with more advanced codecs. I wouldn't stress it too much.

2. People still buy LPs. Studios still make them. Why? There's demand.

*actually, studios can distribute UV copies on pretty much any medium that can hold enough digital data, and they can be copied freely. The trick is the files will only work on a player authorized to play that video. The real problem is that the Blu-ray DRM is too different from UV's, so we can't do anything with the disc but watch it, same as now.

It should be possible to use Managed Copy to make a UV compatible file from almost any Blu-ray, except for all the contracts that'd probably violate.

I'm not surprised since Ultraviolet video specs don't support all the video formats Blu-ray does and Blu-ray's video specs don't support all the video specs Ultraviolet does. The Ultraviolet specs linked in the thread also don't mention 3D but I'm assuming they're the same (or will be) as Blu-ray for the HD resolutions.

I don't think I've seen 3D mentioned anywhere in regards to Ultraviolet. It looks like it's simply not supported, and it's a bit too late to add to the spec. Looks like we'll have to keep Blu-ray around anyway. sigh.

48fps would've been nice too. Interlaced would've been nice, since there's a small chunk of early digital anime that's natively interlaced. Ultraviolet 2.0?

Yeah, I 'pampered' myself alright.
hope the surgeons pamper you good enough to be back in action

Blu-ray will last for the rest of YOUR life? Sorry pal, nothing lasts forever. I'm assuming as such a BD enthusiast you actually own some discs, right?
Well there you go...hold onto them forever. Problem solved.
You constantly whine on these threads every day about something that we have NO CONTROL over.
You like blu-ray, I like blu-ray, we all like blu-ray. Enjoy it while it lasts, however long that may be, and stop crying about it's demise.
You almost come across as a "reverse troll": You claim to love blu-ray, but yet in every post you keep moaning about it's demise to streaming. Despite, knowledgable posts to the contrary.
How about everytime you feel the urge to post about the "forthcoming demise of blu-ray", you pop in one of those BDs and calm the hell down.
Do you fret like this every time you cross the street? You never know what may happen!
I was answering another posters comments. I have 500 discs by the way. So i have a lot riding on this.

Hmm, the pre-op Valium seems to be working as I'm on a YouTube roll.

"Stay thirsty my friend."

I find those surgeon types to always be rather frugal on the post-op morphine.

I have a large collection but I can't control what the future brings nor do I worry about it. I'll always be able to watch my collection as long as a functioning bluray player exists. I am happy with my purchases and enjoy them immensely.

Go make some popcorn and watch a good flick on bluray.

One of the best aspects of Blu-ray, versus any previous format, is that, for a large number of the titles released, very little usable information remains in the original art (the masters) that isn't represented on disc. I would say that a majority of the Blu-ray discs I own look better than any print I've ever seen of their respective films. If Blu-ray were to end tomorrow (not saying it will!) and never be replaced by a superior format, I would still have this awesome collection that I could continue to enjoy for the next couple of decades.

I feel your pain...I haven't golfed in ages, but plan on playing on Friday. Unfortunately, I don't look forward to being sore for 2 days afterwards since I haven't used those "golf muscles" for too long. Good luck with the surgery.

UV is just a meta scheme, registry database. It is nothing new. The difference is that with UV you are now backed by UV. What I mean is that the DC with the BD was DC, a Vudu copy was Vudu..... Now UV came out if you get a DC with the BD you register it with UV but it is the same DC, you buy a Vudu copy it is registered with UV (and that will be true with any system like Vudu that joined UV) but it is still Vudu.... now if that system goes out of business (and possibly if you change device) you get to continue watching your Copies by using an other UV system.
