I have to say, as someone who likes the shifting IMAX ratios and was really going to miss them when I couldn’t play the 3D discs anymore, this is pretty amazing. Hopefully one day they can add the Spidey flicks as well.

Sony seems to have dropped IMAX Enhanced for disc and reserved it for their Bravia CORE streaming service - especially since their TVs with the service built are among the few to actually have the IMAX mode. So that's where I would look for the Spider-Man MCU films in IE.

The expanded framing looks so "loose", for want of a betterer word. Apart from that opening scene in IW aboard the Asgardian ship which really does look too tight in 'scope, the rest is so much dead air IMO. These comments are based on the 1.78 Russian iTunes versions which aren't a full IMAX expansion admittedly, they crop the sides and open up top/bottom to varying degrees vs the 2.39 on a shot-by-shot basis (possibly to get around IMAX licensing restrictions for the actual 1.90 versions?) but even so, they'd look even "looser" to me if the full embiggening were applied. Not a fan.

Both Black Panther and Black Widow are listed on here and other sites as being native 4K presentations. However, I work at a movie theater and both were 2K DCPs (digital cinema package). DCPs come directly from the DI (as far as I know) and, in every other case, have always matched (2K DIs are 2K DCPs are upscaled 4K discs; 4K DIs are 4K DCPs are native 4K discs). So, would Disney really downscale 4K DIs to 2K for the DCPs and then use the 4K DI to create native 4K discs, or is this simply misinformation being constantly recycled across multiple sites? At first I thought I had misremembered Black Panther (despite no other MCU film being native 4K), but I doublechecked when the film was re-released post-COVID and, sure enough, it was 2K. And, the Black Widow DCP was still in my system when the disc hit and that was definitely a 2K DCP. It just seems odd that Disney would go through all that trouble, making me believe that these are, in fact, both upscales mislabeled as native. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
It looks like Black Widow has been changed to 2K on IMDb. I sent a correction for Black Panther, so hopefully that will be corrected soon, as well.

Didn't have to raise the volume several decibels like I do with other Disney releases and thought the bass was absolutely rockin'. Nat fighting the widows was particularly awesome. Consider me impressed!

IMAX ratio was the only thing that kept me buying the 3D versions, so if they don't release them on 4K disc and only stream them, then it really does make me wonder if I should even buy them on physical anymore. I probably will but will maybe wait for sales whereas I usually got them on release day.

In the IMAX CINEMA they'd work as well as anything else on that giant screen, it's all about the immersion. In the home? Dead air every fookin where just like pretty much everything else I've ever seen that was composed for 2.39 but had the mattes removed. Your boy Deakins doesn't like it much, doesn't that count for anything?

Everything I've watched that opens up the ratio looks awesome. Other Marvel films have done it on the 3D Blu-rays and even if you watch them in 2D the IMAX scenes are still more immersive on the TV.

Also if you download the Infinity War and Endgame trailers in the IMAX ratio they look stellar at home too. I'm excited to check them out on D+ but annoyed that streaming is getting the better version of the film yet again

Frozen 2 got a 6-part 3.5 hours making of on Disney+, it's so comprehensive they turned it into it's own series. Meanwhile on the BD they had to pad out the extras by including stuff like "Into the Unknown in 29 Languages" or "Did You Know???".

For me at least, the only ones that seem to work the best with the IMAX expansion would be Infinity War and Endgame. Doctor Strange would look awesome too. But all the other films are fine and dandy the way they are in the scope ratio. But you do have a point in the fact that some movies look to have empty space when it's open matte.

When IW and Endgame pop up I'll have a look see. I'm not convinced by the partway open matte Russian iTunes transfers as said, but I'll give them a go in the 'proper' IMAX ratio for the sake of it.

Dr Strange I've got on 3D VAR and although the embiggening has a nice amount of impact I found myself not noticing it after a while, whereas in the Guardians movies the aspect changes really zing.

Maybe I'm talking out of my ass, but I remember James Gunn saying something along the lines of the IMAX scenes in his Guardians movies were designed to be seen ONLY on the 3D version.
Aren't Disney kind of going against his wishes by putting this version out in 2D?

Yeah. The 3D Blu-ray’s of Guardians 1&2, Doctor Strange, and Civil War all have open matte/IMAX framing. And they’re fantastic viewing experiences. Partly because with the Guardians films they have window breaking (I dunno the correct term) where the scene will be in scope and have objects moving outwards and over the black bars. Similar to Life of Pi. There’s a really great moment in Guardians 2 where the space ship breaks those bars and the framing opens up to full frame.

You can’t replicate that in 2D.

I’m not even against Digital, I use both daily. I just think disc should be the premium experience. Ugh. It makes me feel like I should just sell my shit and watch everything on my phone lol.
Yea... Doesnt disney even market these as the " Ultimate collector's edition" lol it should absolutely include everything possible starting with dolby vision.

For 2 maybe as it has all the frame breaks

I can't remember what episode it is, but one of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars Episodes had an error with the framing on the blu-ray. instead of some of the objects staying in the scope frame, they escape it. I believe the reason behind this error was that the show aired on TV in 1.78 but the show was 2.40 on the blu-ray and no one bothered to keep the objects in the frame. None the less, it gives an awesome effect!
