Netflix can walk and chew gum at the same time. It's called multiple revenue streams. There are many potential customers here and in other countries that choose not to subscribe to streaming services for one reason or the other and irrespective of what exclusive content might be offered. The given service may not be available to them. The service may be available, but they can't afford it. They might be able to afford it, but have lousy Internet. They might have great Internet, but have limited data usage and expensive overage fees. They might be able to afford it, have great Internet, unlimited data, but not be able to spend enough time each month streaming to make it worth it. And here's a crazy one, the person might just prefer to spend what little time they do have in front of the TV watching a Blu-ray that they actually own which delivers a far better audio/video experience with no strings attached. I could go on. So tell me. How does it make perfect sense to ignore all those potential customers? Heck, Netflix would be ignoring their streaming customers as well. Why settle for just the subscription revenue? I have no doubt there will be many who purchase this who also pay for streaming. Netflix knows better than anyone that people still value physical media. They need look no further than their own customer base. There are many who only subscribe to their disc rental service and I dare say are some of their most loyal customers. If Netflix didn't want anyone buying this TV show on physical media they wouldn't be making it available on physical media at all. Sure, this release is a great way to promote Season 2. At the same time, it's also a great way to encourage customers to hold out for Season 2 on Blu-ray rather than pay to stream it. As for a wide release, again, what sense does it make to not tap into that potential revenue. Furthermore, once the official DVD's and Blu-ray's are out there in the wild it's precisely in the best interest of Netflix to take steps for an eventual wide release. Oh, that's right. Wouldn't hold my breath, The Hunger Games was a digipak with trays for the discs and but then Catching Fire and Mockingjay pt 1 and 2 were digibooks with cardboard sleeves.
