I don't think that the DVDCompare entry for the Ultimate Collection, regarding GHOSTBUSTERS I & II, is entirely accurate and needs to be revised there.

My review of the movie and new UHD 4K from the Ghostbusters Collection boxset.
What is there to say about this movie? it's a perfect cocktail of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, comedy and adventure in one quality meal that makes it a classic since 1984. This movie has a phenomenal cast from Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, Sigourney Weaver, William Atherton, and others. You have charismatic likable relatable down to earth characters you go with the flow for and each have a unique personality to them as you believe the actors are the characters. Who knew this was a project originally by Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi until Belushi died 40 years ago, Dan had this concept about ghost hunters in the tradition of 40s/50s ghost hunting comedy movies. Even borrowed bits from H.P. Lovecraft's works in some parts of the script. Harold Ramis step in and co-write the script with Dan and sold it to Columbia as they thought it was an out there concept and was not sure it would get made but Ivan Reitman after doing Stripes and Heavy Metal which he produced was fresh off those for another project as he really loved the script and accepted the job to direct. The film costed $25–30 million to make as they had a crew of special effects workmen from Steve Johnson to Richard Edlund to do some of the phenomenal creature effects and more in this movie. Originally they wanted Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Lloyd, John Lithgow and Christopher Walken to play Egon but I'm very glad Harold Ramis played Egon as he was born to play that character and put his DNA in that character. Even Richard Pryor, Tom Hanks, Michael Keaton, Chevy Chase, Robin Williams and Steve Guttenberg were considered to play Peter Venkman, but i'm glad Murray got the role as it was destined fate that he put his DNA and his stamp on this character as i don't see anyone else who is Venkman or Egon other than Ramis and Murray. Even Eddie Murphy was considered for Winston, but I'm glad Murphy did the right choice to do Beverly Hills Cop instead as Ernie Hudson was just right. During a test screening in Feb The film was first screened for test audiences on February 3, 1984, with unfinished effects shots to determine if the comedy worked. Even at this point, Reitman was still concerned audiences would not react well to the Marshmallow Man because of its deviation from the realism of the rest of the film. Reitman recalled that approximately 200 people were recruited off the streets to view the film in a theater on the Burbank lot. It was during the opening librarian scene that Reitman knew the film worked. Audiences reacted with fear, laughs, and applause as the Librarian Ghost transformed from a lady into a monster. The fateful Marshmallow Scene was met with a similar reaction, and Reitman knew he would not have to reshoot any scenes. The screening for fellow industry members fared less well. Price recalled laughing as the rest of the audience sat deadpan, rationalizing that an industry audience wants failure. Murray and Aykroyd's then-agent Michael Ovitz recalled an executive telling him, "Don’t worry: we all make mistakes," while Roberto Goizueta, then-chairman of Columbia's parent, The Coca-Cola Company, said: "Gee, we're going to lose our shirts." Basically it was a really risky film and the executives were like "If this fails, you won't work in this town again". This was from a time when films actually took risks. In the months before its debut, a teaser trailer was released focused on the "No ghosts" logo, helping the icon to become recognizable far in advance, and generating interest in the film without mentioning its title or its stars. A separate theatrical trailer for the film contained a functional toll-free telephone number with a message by Murray and Aykroyd waiting for the 1,000 callers per hour it received over a six-week period. They also appeared in a video for ShoWest, a theater-owner convention, to promote the film. Columbia spent approximately $10 million on marketing, including $2.25 million on prints, $1 million on promotional materials, and $7 million on advertising and miscellaneous costs including a $150,000 premiere for a hospital and the hotel costs for the press. It opened June 9th 1984 in theaters everywhere, it earned critical acclaim and became the highest grossing movie of 1984 outside Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. It became one of the most beloved movies of all time and of the decade, even the highest grossing comedy of all time before Home Alone took the crown. And the highest grossing movie of 1984 before Beverly Hills Cop took the crown. This movie became a part of American pop culture since 38 years ago and has became a timeless work that continues to have a long lasting legacy that created 2 sequels, a reboot, 2 animated shows, games, comics, action figures and more over the years as it had an impact on culture. There's also the fantastic soundtrack with the iconic Ray Parker Jr song with other songs like Cleaning Up the Town, I believe it's Magic and more to the outstanding score by Elmer Bernstein which is memorable as hell. Everyone gives terrific performances as the direction is equally brilliant and the screenplay is excellent with wit, brains and a nice sense of humor with memorable quotes. There is also excellent practical creature effects which are very effective to this day like the terror dogs to Slimer to Stay Puft Marshmallow man. You also have Sigourney in her sexiest in this movie when she's wearing that red outfit looking seductive possessed by a demon. I always loved this movie since i was 4 years old seeing the 1985 re-issue 2 times in theaters and put a massive impact on my childhood. I would watch/tape every episode every afternoon and Saturday of The Real Ghostbusters, i had a t-shirt as a kid, i had figures with firehouse, car and blaster with trap, i played the arcade game of the Real Ghostbusters, i saw GB 2 in theaters on opening day, i ate the cereal, i rented the video games and so on. This movie is a classic for a reason and influential! it's an example of lightning in a bottle. The new UHD 4K set of all 3 movies being the official universe is fantastic. The new 4K of this movie has amazing PQ and fantastic dolbyvision which really makes the movie with it's visuals come to life better than ever and sounds better than ever with it's 5.1 surround and theatrical audios. commentaries, broadcast TV version, Dana audition video featuring different actresses auditioning for the character, featurettes, deleted scenes, rare 114 minute preview cut of the movie, dailies, documentary, TV version, TV commercial, photo gallery, music video, trailers, promo, 1984 Showest exhibitor promo, and EPK. My rating for the movie: 5 out of 5 stars (i find nothing wrong with it! it's a classic). |

Speaking of deleted whatnots, those dailies for the first film reveal exactly why filmmaking is some sort of alchemy. It's absolutely amazing to see that stuff, yes, but it proves just why those takes didn't end up in the film. And it's not because "you're just used to what's in the film" or whatever excuse. The timing isn't there, the energy isn't there, the belief isn't there, it sounds like people reciting lines, marking time until that one moment of magic where they're not acting, they're being.
Also, those dailies scans (of the full aperture, hence the 2.66-ish ratio showing extra info on the soundtrack area not meant to be seen, like the light on the left when Janine takes Egon some coffee) are of a raw negative or IP with what looks like zero or very little colour correction, just a basic dialling out of the orange mask, as they're very pale and washed out. If you can force HDR10 somewhere in your display chain they look a lot betterer. As a digital code. On a slip of paper. In just the US set. So it's not in the UK set in any way, shape or form. Please stop the bullshit. Thanks. Last edited by Geoff D; 02-05-2022 at 02:07 PM. |

Yeah, and I understand now why directors have to break their hearts to remove a scene that works brilliantly but doesn't serve the overall film, as much of the time deleted scenes are, uh, deleted because they just don't work for the reasons stated, as proven by the Eugene Levy stuff in GBII. I'm so glad that people will finally get to spunk over those scenes but it's painfully obvious as to why they were removed, so losing them wasn't a hardship for the filmmakers. But when everything comes together and you have to ditch a scene anyway it's gotta hurt.
