Uh.. considering the UHDs are the same in every other release of the collector's set everywhere in the world.. what do we do? ._.
Well, if they have to do new discs for the UHDs anyway maybe then they'll fix the faulty Spanish (Spain) audio on GB2. |

GBII is a lot closer though. |

I'm not gonna bother scrutinizing ultra zoomed portions of the frame in a few select shots, but overall the screens all show the new disc has finer grain structure. It's not night and day, but I can see a slight improvement in a casual look over of those caps. Not enough that I would feel the need to upgrade, but enough where it's clearly the preferable version if I was choosing between the two.

Oh I get it, I mean I literally said in my own review that some, maybe even many, won't see any differences at all when viewing them on their own setups, and might even come away thinking that the new one is softer because the grain is finer and the DV playback slightly duller. Hell, things like this are one of the great forum divides because to some folks they can see it clear as day, others wouldn't in a month of scrutinising, and many are sitting far enough away to the point where things like DNR, sharpening and poor compression are all but invisible. Not saying you belong to any one of those categories but it's hard enough to get people to see major compression issues never mind a mere refinement from good to great, and that's what these GB re-issues are: a refinement, not a revolution. So I fully expect reactions like yours and I respect them - just don't tell me it's not betterer by looking at a few caps when I've extensively compared the two in motion.

Anyone else got this follow-up response from Sony, which I just got?:

I guess it depends on how sensitive you are to compression artifacts, but the newer release looks much better IMO. If you look at the grain structure between the two releases, especially around specular highlights, you will see more information as opposed to smooth blocks. Darker scenes and shadow areas show less difference but still some improvement. The screenshots with special effects are inherently softer so you'll see less of a difference. Overall, a clear upgrade in PQ.
