I just sent off another (3rd) email to Sony regarding the issues with:
- damaged packaging that amazon refuses to accept responsibility for
- audio issue
- wrong TV cuts

We'll see what happens

I sent an email and got a response less than an hour later.
They want a video of the audio being wrong. Uh, what? That won't work at all!

They also want a video of the wrong TV cut. My email client can't send a video file that large!

Yeah. Unfortunately they stopped with the labels for home video not too long after the new, discrete formats came out. Before that they used to brag about Dolby Surround, Dolby Pro Logic I, II, etc. and for a short, short while, people mostly did know what to do. Then they dropped all mention and many who even did know what to do figured they had dropped the DPL encoding.

yeah for sure, as with a few other re-releases like Labrynth, they used better encoding and often bump the bitrate up a good bit

not just the grain, but look at any micro details, they are more truly defined on the new discs and less random, less jaggy or blotchy with compression noise/distortion, all the micro details are more exactly, truly defined now

This set finally found its way to me over in Australia courtesy of WOWHD. Seamail would've probably been quicker

Happily, the box is pristine and the discs are correct. The lights inside the box don't work, but I don't care at all. The lights would've eventually stopped working anyway and I didn't buy it for the box, I bought it for the discs.

T'will be interesting to see if anything happens with regards to the audio and the TV cut. Maybe the DV reissues of 1&2 will be released individually this year sometime with corrected audio. We shall see.

Apart from the packaging and the "complete" nature of this set, what really makes this worth buying if you already own the previous UHDs? Anything?

There's just a couple more deleted scenes than before isn't there? I could be wrong but I can't find a full list of the features for the set.

Can't you just fold down the 5.1/7.1. Or unhook all but two of your speakers?

And don’t forget to cross the audio tracks. There’s definitely a very slim chance we’ll survive.

Sounds like they're doing everything they can to avoid acknowledging the problems. For the TV cuts, you could always send them a link to the proper TV cut to show that the one on the disc isn't correct.

This job's definitely not worth $11,500 a year.

It really is that simple. But even if it’s not and you engage a surround DSP it’s not going to ruin the audio, as if it’s straight stereo it’s still going to have the dialogue mixed equally between left and right so the DSP will extract that into the centre, and if it’s dual mono it’ll just steer everything into the centre speaker. If it’s not doing either of these things and it sounds funky and weird then just turn the DSP off.
I actually think Neural-X does a better job at handling Dolby Stereo Surround tracks then the Dolby upmixer. But yeah, I agree. I don't know why people make such a fuss out of it, I just leave Neural-X on 100% of the time and everything sounds fine. Be it mono, straight stereo, or matrixed surround.
I'm curious how the Auro 3D upmixer handles matrixed surround, something I'll have to try when I upgrade to a better AVR.

I was going to pull the trigger with a price drop for that reason only. Hopefully, we will get individual releases with corrected discs.
