I really don't think the box is that cheap? The cardboard is pretty sturdy and it looks nice with the clear plastic slip overtop of it. Tbh it's one of the nicer box sets I own.

They're the only studio without a streaming service, are still pushing for the theatrical experience, and are delivering physical media at a good pace. Where they're failing is not releasing enough units, and having discs sell out way too soon, leaving a whole bunch of collectors missing out, resulting in scalper prices on eBay. Volume one of the Columbia Classics is a perfect example.

While I understand that they need to be cautious nowadays with physical media sales not being what they used, the fact that they've double-downed on stating they're not going to do another run of this set when there's this much demand doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I think they're leaving a good chuck of money on the table for themselves, and a lot of unhappy collectors, both physical media and Ghostbusters collectors, a double-hit if you will.

This also makes ponder at how all future ultimate editions and anniversary sets are going to be released by all the distributors eventually, just a small run, and if you don't pre-order within the first 24 hrs, you're outta luck. This ultimately is going to get really, really expensive for collectors, especially if they release these big hundred dollar plus sets every month. Ghostbusters this month, The Godfather 50th next month, and who knows what else is in the pipeline for both the big studios and the boutique labels. Makes it difficult for collectors with limited budgets, then missing out entirely unless again, paying scalper prices on eBay. Not a good outlook for the future from where I'm standing, if this is how things continue to move forward.

I'm hearing the deleted scenes aren't as extensive as I thought they would be. If I don't care about the rough cuts or TV edits or the book reprint, what's the real draw in keeping this and not just picking up the existing single disc 4Ks?

I'm having a hard time justifying opening this up when I see the secondary market prices.

Well all of my discs are correct, not as damaged as I thought it was until tearing the wrapping off. (Shipped in white amazon bag). Havent viewed the discs, but I'm sure that I will enjoy the new features and this will go great next to my BTTF flux capacitor box. Now bring on a turtle shell box set for all of the OG TMNT movies in 4K! Lol

That's the main draw for me. I already own the first two films, the 4K UHD 35th Anniversary Steelbook, and I really had no intention of ever buying these films again. But the rough cut and the making of book reprint are the draw for me. As I stated in an earlier post, that book is almost impossible to find, and when you do come across one, it can fetch anywhere up to $200 depending on its condition. As both a fan of GB and making of books, it's something I've been wanting a copy of for a long time.

I'm also a fan of things like preview cuts and the alternate television versions, just like the Blade Runner 5-disc Ultimate Collection with the workprint cut. Considering that these cuts are on the special bonus discs, it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't made available on any other future GB release on 4K or Blu-ray.

I guess it depends on who you talk too. We all have different reasons for wanting this set, this is just mine.

This is down to $119.99 CAD (from $159.99 earlier today) on Amazon.ca. Still not as cheap as the $99.99 pre-order price, but a lot better than what this was going for as recent as 30 mins ago.

Thanks for the heads up!

I just ordered it again at that price point, saved myself $40.00. I'll wait a few days and see how things progress before canceling my original order, the one at $159.99.

Considering that it's sold out everyone else, especially in the U.S., very strange to see Amazon drop the price, or still being in stock for that matter.

Gonna try and get some $$ back from Amazon. Minor damage aside, still happy I got it at all, it’s a really well done set. Slips are gorgeous and I actually wanna go through the book.

Mine arrived yesterday in one of those oversized "padded" brown mailers. One corner got slightly dented as a result. I contacted them about it, and they offered a 25% refund on it.

I mean, geez... a $100 oversized heavier set and they can't just ship it in a box? I could order a $4 toothbrush and they'll pack it in a huge box with extra air pillows... which has literally happened before.

All the films from the Columbia vol 1 have seen individual releases except for Lawrence, which we’ll most likely get this year anyway.

Sony has historically always managed to keep good supply of their releases and while the LE box sets may become more scarse in the future, regular releases won’t disappear which is good for casual collectors.

Nope, not on 4K they haven't, at least not in the United States and Canada. The Columbia Vol. 1 set included the following...

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Lawrence of Arabia
Dr. Strangelove
Gandhi
A League of Their Own
Jerry Maguire

Dr. Strangelove is the the only title that's released from that set individually on 4K.

Lots of speculation that Lawrence is coming this year, but I certainly wouldn't hold my breathe either. Just never know based on some of the weird decisions these Hollywood people make. Anything is possible.

Little OT: besides the 5-disc DVD collector's edition, is there some othere release on BD or 4K which contains all of those cuts and bonus features?

As far as I've been able to tell from my searching, the only way to get all five versions in 4K is a DigiPak version long since out-of-print in the UK only. Or at least that's how I'm reading it, or perhaps it's just "The Final Cut' in 4K, and the other four versions only on standard Blu-ray.

Either way, if you're in the U.S. or Canada, only the "The Final Cut" has ever been available in 4K.

EDIT; Sorry, I missed the first part of your question, as you implied only about the 5-disc DVD collector's edition. There is also a Blu-ray version of that set as well, also long since out-of-print.
