Then, they turn around and not only do the same Dolby Vision for Ghostbusters but also give it the "ultimate" treatment with the bonus discs. Once again, why not just save the money and drop in the HDR10 discs of 1 & 2 for the Ultimate set if it was going to be a limited run? So your cash grab theory, which I'm not outright disputing, applies to Spider-man and not Ghostbusters/Karate Kid? Are you saying that Sony's ideology was that Karate Kid is going to sell more copies with Dolby but Spider-man is going to sell anyway, so lets **** the fans and just re-issue the HDR10 without the blu-rays, even though the 4K discs have no extras? And release yet another stand alone blu-ray trilogy 2 months before the 4K? Like I said, I'm not disputing it, but it's a bit of a stretch.
Even in other Sony sets the application of DV is uneven at best, what with Taxi Driver and, uh, Social Network being the only beneficiaries in the Columbia Collection vol.2. And DV still isn't a guarantee with these Sony sets, as the very recent Underworld LE proved.

But you're thinking solely of DV as a prestige marque for prestige content, something that sends sales over the top. Not an unfair assessment, though I'm thinking it's also treated by Sony as an extra sweetener for content that may not necessarily sell by the boatload or which needs a genuine reason to make people rebuy on UHD yet again, which is why they'd spend the money on it for something like Labyrinth or KK (though technically the latter was only uprating one existing release to DV, the other two KK movies were brand new to UHD), whereas Spider-Man stuff is like printing money especially as there's a big nostalgia wave for the Maguire movies for obvious reasons. Heck, I think the usage of DV in CC vol.2 speaks to both these approaches: they put it on an all-time classic that don't need no stinkin' DV to shift units but did it for the prestige of it (just like with Lawrence) and also put it on a far more modern film, the inclusion of which left most people scratching their heads as to what constitutes a 'classic'.

You're regarding the Spideys not being redone as a backlash against DV but the evidence simply doesn't support that. Look at the entire Spidey package, such as it is: it's just the three UHDs in a single case with digital codes. No added tat, no boxset, not even Blu-rays - so does your logic tell you that Sony are also going to ditch Blu-rays and tat and special packaging as well just because they're not included here? That doesn't track for me. Keep in mind that no UHD Spidey standalones were ever released in North America, surprise surprise, so all the folks who didn't get the trilogy LE but didn't want to import have been without them for all this time. The new Spidey set is the very definition of a quick cash-in job most likely because they didn't feel the need to tart them up, that they'd sell regardless because of that pent-up demand, while other content was felt to need more inducements.

Watched Ghostbusters II tonight. Another knockout transfer, but man, the commentary sucks. Nothing but Reitman, Medjuck and Aykroyd laughing at their own jokes, often with minutes on end going by without them saying anything. Definitely skip it. A shame, considering how chatty and informative the 1999 DVD commentary on the original film was.

I got it at the $160 CDN price point, but Amazon gave me a partial refund because it went down to $120 CAD after it shipped.

Also, does anyone know what the purpose of the sliding cardboard tab on the top of the box is?

Edit: I got all the correct disks, and Amazon packaged it in a small box that the set fit snugly into.
That is for you to open the set without physically prying open the box. Just slide it down and the box set opens.

Bill Murray in a Ghostbusters movie is the canon rule by itself.

I consider Red Sonja a Conan movie and don't pay attention to rights issues.

Also the name Zuul mean anything to you?

They are the L.A. division deal with it. Love it in the box. Fits so snuggy.

As cute as it is, completely unnecessary. I will just pull apart to save the wear and tear.

I wonder how long light will last.

Mine arrived today from BestBuy.ca. Thankfully in great shape with nothing missing/wrong. Watched the "Behind Closed Doors" documentary. A little too fluffy "Entertainment Tonight" style for me. So much more to dive into later.....

Yesterday I had a notification from target that one collector's set was in stock. I got it in my cart and was checking out when someone else got it since it then showed as sold out!

Not sure how the 2016 film characters were the L.A. division since it took place in New York. Just an observation

Same. Mine was supposed to arrive yesterday (2/1), but I got two "Delayed in Transit" notifications for 4pm and 7pm, and now it says "Expected Feb 2-3" but with no updates today so far.

Have a theory about the extremely limited nature of the ultimate collection, online only, sold out far in advance, etc.

We're only two years away from the 40th anniversary of Ghostbusters. Of course there's going to be a 40th anniversary edition (w/ Ghostbusters II possibly included). Wouldn't really make sense to do a big retail campaign right now when Afterlife is what's being pushed, if they have plans to really focus on the originals in a couple years.

But in the meantime, why not make some easy money off the hardcores (and they clearly underestimated the number of hardcores).

Will we be getting a more mainstream audience priced release in two years?

I was thinking much the same thing. We'll see what happens with Lawrence this year, it's the 60th anniversary of that and if Sony don't do a standalone now, will they ever? But it'll be an indicator of their thinking re: these limited edition boxset exclusives, some have crept out (though more in some territories than others) but they've held back the highest profile one by far and there must be a reason for it.

Same with these redone GB discs, Sony won't have reauthored them just to be included once in a strictly limited edition boxset. It's the long game that they're playing with the big four-oh only two years away, and while people will be thinking of all the money that's been 'left on the table' right now, if this set was indeed limited to only 4000 units but still sold out at $100 each then that's $400,000, no small chunk of change! They wouldn't see all that money but even so, it's a set that needed minimal work with regard to the most expensive part of the process, as the movies were already mastered in 4K DV at source.

Is there any source that has the quantity for this set as a hard 4,000 units? Because if there isn't, I think a user just confused the hashtag #4K as an indicator that there'd be only 4,000 copies of it instead of meaning... you know, 4K.

Entirely possible, hence the reference to "if it was" in my post above. But if they did 10k units, say, then that's a cool million which might put into perspective why Sony aren't fussed about standalones for the new GB discs right now!

A three disc DVD collection was released yesterday. I'm obviously talking about an Ultra HD release with a more mainstream MSRP than $150 that is actually being pushed in stores. Have a hard time believing either Ghostbusters by itself, or Ghostbusters 1 & 2 won't get some sort of 40th anniversary treatment in 2024 (same thing for E.T. later this year).

Bring it. Already bought darn things many times..lets see:

Bluray, 30th to get vuduu digital code, mastered in 4K bluray (fake 4K), Digi book (can't remember why), 4K singles (got MA code), now ultimate and all its goodness!.

Bring on 40 and attach some more extras. Akroyd orgasm for sure.

All this crying over limited reminds me of Monty Python where they say it is a limited edition...when the last one is sold they will print no more!
