This will be my last statement on this.

So, no. You didn't tape anything "before the VHS was distributed."

See how memories can be tricky things?

Did HBO *EVER* show a movie before it was released on VHS?

And just to bring this back around full circle, Ghostbusters premiered on HBO the same summer as Gremlins

I was referring to Scream for Help. The Gremlins example was for HBO Family. Are you trying to get it wrong?

And yes HBO absolutely did. They got exclusive first rights especially on original programming.

I don't care about Scream For Help. I have no idea what that even is. My only interest is Gremlins. That's it.

And OF COURSE HBO released their own movies before they were released on VHS. Please re-read everything I wrote. I never referenced any other movie other than Gremlins and NONE of my end of the discussion was involving any other movie.

So in other words you will knock down anything that doesn't fit your minute example that I wasn't trying to prove in the first place?

HBO would license prints that had different cuts. Last House on the Left is a prime example where different areas showed different cuts. Valley Girl originally had different music that was later cut out of the VHS (Culture Club was on early prints).

There were some movies that never made it to VHS at all.

I have a plethora of tapes that I have done over the last 40 years and my father has even more. It is sad how much is never distributed at all.

While it would be your "proof" to rub it in your face, I can already tell just how much you would switch gears to save face.

HBO like any other network does weird cuts/dubbing/and most of all original licensing. They get different sources and hunting down what was shown is spotty at best.

In the late 70's and early 80's it was less controlled. It is just a fact and I am sorry if it pains you to learn this. I think we are done. Claim your hollow victory. I have no problem with being "wrong" in your eyes.

This isn't remotely personal. I started out this discussion asking about Gremlins. That's *ALL* I cared about. I had never heard of an edit that HBO did in the 80's and you insisted there was one. I was interested in finding out specifics.

I couldn't care less about any of the other movies you're referencing nor did I ever say HBO didn't have alternate cuts. That's not moving goalposts. It's almost like you're not reading anything I'm writing but only looking to argue.

Good luck.

Hey thanks!
I didn't like how the old 4k one looked and didn't want to pay for 2 extra movies that I don't like. The old one was going for $9.99 during Black Friday.

Don't take my post for "gospel"
I was just saying what it looked like on my display.
Was curious if it's just my set-up or if anyone else noticed it.

I watched it today and didn't think it looked soft, although I did not compare it to the original release to say whether it's "softer". I was immensely impressed by it, though. There was one shot that looked pretty soft (I believe when they are getting kicked out of the university), but I am assuming it was always like that (didn't verify).

I sure did not remember the Atmos track being so active, though. Has to be fuzzy memory on my end because I can't imagine they would have tinkered with it between releases.

I love the Atmos tracks on all of them. I started with the stereo and just couldn't do it.

I finally watched all 4. The last one started slow but had a great ending...and surprise too.

I love them all so much. I think Answer the Call is better than Afterlife but all have charm to me.

This is truly the best release of the year for me.

This is how 4K's should be done. Answer the Call needed extended cut in 3D. The Imax scope surprise is so outstanding.

I hope it gets a Dolby Vision release so bad. It gets so much backlash and I din't understand it. It us a fun movie.

You got 11 speakers? That was flying around just lovely. The bass was kicking too. Yes I am just fine.

The stereo track was tinny and lacked bottom. It sounded nice, but archaic as it was.

Stay Puff needed to thunder and he did!

The film’s audio is available here in a new English Dolby Atmos mix prepared by Tim Hoogenakker at Formosa Group (7.1 Dolby TrueHD compatible). As with the video, this new mix is a notable improvement on the Blu-ray audio. This obviously isn’t going to compare to newer film surround sound, but the Atmos mix delivers great dynamic range and the revised staging brings out all the little nuances of the film’s soundtrack. I think you’ll find that the height channels are used to great effect here to expand and lift the soundstage in the film’s various paranormal sequences – particularly during the hunt for Slimer and the climatic fight with Zuul and the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man.
Hmm guess I am not alone. I could post 10 more like this from respected reviewers.

I am not sure I'd even agree with that reviewer's assessment that it doesn't compare to a modern mix. That Atmos track on Ghostbusters was really active and used the entire soundstage to great effect (I do have a 7.1.4 setup).

Afterlife was Atmos demo material and the original wasn't that far behind, IMO.

As I was watching Ghostbusters, I started to be in almost disbelief that I'm watching this movie in my house looking and sounding like this.... and so appreciative of Sony for making it happen, especially when we have other examples of beloved classics that don't get this treatment and we will likely be stuck with compromised versions of those films for the rest of our lives. Sony wasn't even content with their previous near-perfect release. They had to actually try and do better. Someone at Sony cares and it shows.

It also doesn't hurt that after all this time this movie itself is still this good. If I didn't have so much to watch, I could watch it again right now.

Anyone heard of restocks or a 2nd printing? I'm pretty shocked at sold out. I guess the first printing really was limited.

Actually Ghostbusters premiered on Christmas Eve 1985. Remembered coming home from evening Church service and my parents letting me stay up and watch it.

Totally agree. This one rocked the house. I literally could watch them all again!

I mean seriously if one doesn't appreciate Atmos you got the original mix, nothing to cry about...but dang!!

What a great time to collect. The Quadrilogy is in the pantheon. I haven't even touched RE or UW sets. So much great Sony releases. I can't keep up!

It didn't premiere on HBO until May of 1986.

It's entirely possible you watched it on PPV but it wasn't on HBO.

And here's the PPV commercial from 1985. So...

I think they need to worry about fixing the production line errors first, as a considerable part of the sets are missing discs. They are owing several consumers replacement discs (myself included).

Besides, recent Sony boxsets had surprise restocks, completely unannounced. You just never know. They might consider another also limited 2nd print due to the demand and the troubles, but if that happens, it would likely take a long while. These releases probably take a long time to manufacture. Custom box and all.
