Uh.. considering the UHDs are the same in every other release of the collector's set everywhere in the world.. what do we do? ._.

Well, if they have to do new discs for the UHDs anyway maybe then they'll fix the faulty Spanish (Spain) audio on GB2.

Can I play?

There's definitely a case for x frame being better than y on one version vs the other (different I-frames mayhap?), and in tuning out the blockiness of the old encode the new one may even level off a tiny bit of detail in one part of the frame while bringing it back in another part, but in motion it's no contest from where I'm sitting, the new encode is that bit classier. GBII is a lot closer though.

Because the mods don't do their job properly

Yeah, I see what you're saying especially on the first two shots. Do I think it's enough to justify laying down the money for the set? No, and that's an even easier answer since the stereo track is messed up.

I'm not gonna bother scrutinizing ultra zoomed portions of the frame in a few select shots, but overall the screens all show the new disc has finer grain structure. It's not night and day, but I can see a slight improvement in a casual look over of those caps. Not enough that I would feel the need to upgrade, but enough where it's clearly the preferable version if I was choosing between the two.

Oh I get it, I mean I literally said in my own review that some, maybe even many, won't see any differences at all when viewing them on their own setups, and might even come away thinking that the new one is softer because the grain is finer and the DV playback slightly duller. Hell, things like this are one of the great forum divides because to some folks they can see it clear as day, others wouldn't in a month of scrutinising, and many are sitting far enough away to the point where things like DNR, sharpening and poor compression are all but invisible. Not saying you belong to any one of those categories but it's hard enough to get people to see major compression issues never mind a mere refinement from good to great, and that's what these GB re-issues are: a refinement, not a revolution. So I fully expect reactions like yours and I respect them - just don't tell me it's not betterer by looking at a few caps when I've extensively compared the two in motion.

I don’t disagree with you on that. I mostly bought it for the box and to have the newest film in the set.

Agreed. If the stereo track was unaffected I probably would have purchased this release, but that was a dealbreaker for me. Now, if Sony releases standalones of the first two films with proper stereo tracks I'd buy them for certain.

Anyone else got this follow-up response from Sony, which I just got?:

Thank you for providing us with the requested information - In order to better understand the issue on hand would you be able to provide us with a photo or a short video that explains or displays the issue?

This will help us reach the best solution.
I'm afraid they didn't understand the problem yet... I explained the problem in even more detail now, but I also stated that, no, I'm afraid I'm not able to display the problem with my phone camera even if I tried. Not even being sarcastic here or anything.

EDIT: I'm afraid no one, except for some of us nerds, even knows how such Dolby Stereo tracks are supposed to be played these days...

Without wanting to dip into Typical British Cynicist Mode I was afraid of exactly this, that the PR people/bot wouldn't have a clue about what was being described. Though to be absolutely fair we still get regular questions even on an 'enthusiast' forum like this about the witchcraft that is matrixed audio so I'm not surprised that it's gone whoooooosh over their heads.

I guess it depends on how sensitive you are to compression artifacts, but the newer release looks much better IMO. If you look at the grain structure between the two releases, especially around specular highlights, you will see more information as opposed to smooth blocks. Darker scenes and shadow areas show less difference but still some improvement. The screenshots with special effects are inherently softer so you'll see less of a difference. Overall, a clear upgrade in PQ.
