Just going by the caps, the blu-ray looks a LOT better than the 4K, not because of grain, but because of contrast. The 4K is brighter and comes close to clipping whites, but the blu looks much more even. There's more highlight detail in the blu, in the skies and clouds. I'll stick with the 4K-mastered blu-ray.

Bear in mind that more highlight detail does not necessarily mean more accurate highlight detail.

I can't quite agree with you here sir. I have watched both and feel that the UHD presentation is better across the board.

I don't think the caps are necessarily representative of what the color/contrast looks like as it is an SDR approximation of what the HDR version looks like. I enjoy the caps a lot, but I use them for comparing detail rather than color/contrast.

No no no, you're looking at HDR caps that have been arbitrarily converted to SDR which is clipping out highlight detail like crazy.

I wish mr capsaholic would put a disclaimer or something on there about this.

Exactly this. The caps should be used to compare spatial detail ONLY, not contrast or dynamic range.

And sub-highlight spatial detail specifically, at that- anything blown-out by HDR-to-SDR conversion is going to appear with reduced spatial detail in the highlights, as well.

Well, if the highlights are blown out to shit then there's nothing to see in them anyways which is a common theme on the capsaholic 4K grabs.

Yeah, I don't typically go by caps but I do look at them in general. I had heard negative things about the disc so it's good to hear it's not indicative of the caps (which is often the case and why they can't be fully trusted).

I'd love to get a 4K monitor with HDR that didn't cost a fortune, but I am still playing the waiting game.

I have 4k, but not HDR, as well.

My LG has HDR 10 and looks fantastic, but I would like a 24" monitor for my PC that is 2160p and HDR capable.

Caps of SDR material won't tell you what something is like in motion but they do an excellent job of relaying a snapshot of the colour, contrast, gamma, detail etc, but with SDR-converted HDR material - conversion being necessary otherwise they'd look like this example from Interstellar on a regular SDR monitor:
[Show spoiler]
- then detail is about the only thing that is entirely accurate on these 4K caps.

Find someone here who owns a proper display. Will any recommend sticking to the 1080P with the rationale that it looks better than the UHD?

Are the digital copies UHD or just HDX?

Watching this now and I think anyone who prefers the BD needs to lay off the spores, mold, and fungus.

This is the first movie I ever saw in the theater and one of the first movies I had on VHS as a kid. There has always been a very grey, grainy feel to it that is deeply embedded into my psyche. The UHD does an amazing job of retaining that aesthetic while also turning up the colors when it’s appropriate. The special effects have an appropriate pop to them while I also seemed to notice a more subtle vibrancy to other elements such as the red and blue books you see in the background at the library. Only noticed a handful of scenes where the grain feels a tad too noisy or shots that were overly soft.

Other random things I’ve never noticed before is that you can occasionally see the same extras in the background in different scenes, and the package of Stay Puft marshmallows in Dana’s kitchen.

Audio is very clear and crisp but I unfortunately I can’t crank the Atmos since my son is napping. Overall just a great disc. Can’t believe it took me this long to watch it.

Funny, I also grew up on the original Ghostbusters and it really is one of the few films I remember being grainy. And I noticed Dana's Stay Pufts for the first time during my last viewing too. Nice touch.

These were some of my last 'available in 4K' pickups before fully committing to 4K. Gonna keep on the lookout for a UK release price drop thanks to its superior art.

^^^

Also saw a Stay Puft advert painted on the side of one of the buildings as all the ghosts are escaping Ghostbusters HQ and into the city. No wonder Ray had Stay Puft on his mind when it came time to choose a form for Gozer.

Edit: Also, one of the other movies I saw a lot as a kid that has retained a grainy image in my mind is Die Hard, so I'm really anxious to see how the UHD turns out. I haven't given that movie a proper viewing in nearly a decade so I'm not sure how accurate my memories of it are, but I sure hope they get it right.

My filthy mind couldn't help but take the bolded to a very euphemistic place. I'll see myself out.

I can’t see or understand why anyone who has seen the 4K with HDR would choose the BD. It’s a beautiful transfer.
