Personally, me being more a home theater (thee ability to purchase the biggest screen possible to watch HDR movies on) enthusiast rather than a fan of yet another reason to watch movies on tiny screens….

Anyway, not to be judgmental regarding some peoples’ viewing habits (different strokes for different folks )….official announcements this week (LG) herald that mobile devices with HDR have now, as predicted, advanced thru the developmental pipeline to imminently become available to consumers.

Since HDR10PLUS uses SMPTE 2094-40 it would require HDMI 2.1 but the only HDMI 2.1 feature it would need is the ability to carry dynamic metadata. Also HDMI features are almost always optional and it might be a while before we see 48 Gbps HDMI chips.

The Mobile HDR requirement for smartphones and tablets is good but the requirement for laptops is weak. A requirement of 600 nits to .1 nits means that a HDR laptop screen only needs a contrast ratio of 6,000 to 1.

That is why I asked if a HDR10Plus-compliant Samsung TV is expected to come out soon.


In fact, an HDR10plus-compliant TV doesn’t have to be compatible with HDMI 2.1 interface at least at an initial stage because:
. The OTT streaming apps of the TV will use the internal HEVC decoding service.
. Apparently, the UHD Blu-ray specifications won’t change at least for the time being (i.e. only HDR10, Dolby Vision and Philips HDR).

The main asset of mobile-based Virtual Reality is that people have already their mobile phone; they simply need to add an affordable phone accessory, a VR headset, for next-generation entertainment in the virtual environment: giant screen movie theater, etc.

What makes you say that? Just wondering.

Also, I'm unsure of the process required for the specs to change. Is there a vote scheduled every few months? Or can the specs be changed at any time?
