Finally saw Top Gun 2 today for the $3 movie deal after Jaws 3D.
This was so much better than Top Gun 1 IMO, as it actually focuses on the real Jets in the sky! And that mission was properly built up as the main focus of this film. Top Gun 1? To me, most of it is a lot of banter in bars and Maverick going after his girlfriend, when what I wanted to see are jets in the sky battling. This film actually delivers much better than the first. The film was smart and addressed why they were wasting time on the beach during that dull scene, [Show spoiler] Good. I appreciate when a film explains an otherwise pointless scene of characters just wasting time with no progress to the story. That explanation gave the scene depth and meaning. Good writing. The jet scenes were thankfully plenty throughout about 50% of the film, and the highlight of Top Gun 2. The main mission, great build up and pay off. While I would've appreciated "What happens if we fail this mission?" more, I was entertained and the action was really nicely done. The enemy jets were great with competent pilots [Show spoiler] who knew their stuff. Good! The sound effects were intense with the jet engine blasts surging through the seats in the theater. Really nice. Mostly entertaining any time they're focused on the jets, and the last scenes reminded me of Behind Enemy Lines. Good, entertaining movie and I can see why people really enjoy this one. Top Gun 2: 4/5 A solid focus on real jet flying. Great. Top Gun 1: 2.5/5 Just not enough focus on the jets. |

It's good that you were able to catch this in theaters. I'm debating between seeing this or Bullet Train tonight. It'll probably depend on which one has better seats left when I get to the theater, since I refuse to pay the fees for booking online.

I saw both movies, Bullet Train and Top Gun 2. Top Gun 2: A solid 4/5 stars. It has some really great moments in the film and the real jet action was really cool and plentiful. Bullet Train (on release weekend): 3/5 stars. Had some better moments later on, but it's a film that jumps often to each character's story, so it's all over the place and there is no single star despite the trailers suggesting Brad Pitt is the star. The comedy was okay, and got me smirking once in awhile, but some jokes were not my style. Some decent action, and it definitely had some moments of Kill Bill 1, but the action isn't as plentiful or as cool as that film's. Whichever you decide, enjoy! |

FWIW, I thought that Bullet Train was the one out of the two films that needed to be seen theatrically. The slower start to it would be a handicap to at-home viewing. A smaller screen might also help mask the weak CGI in Maverick, one of its few weaknesses. |

I’m a Chinese guy currently visiting China with several family members who are here permanently. I have some perspective on the matter. People here can enjoy patriotic movies where Americans are bad guys and still enjoy movies where Americans are good guys. Just like Americans can love The Patriot and still enjoy 007 and Harry Potter. In this country, the pro-America, pro-Christianity war movie Hacksaw Ridge made significantly more money than the 3D wuxia blockbuster Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 2. People’s taste is more sophisticated than you think. I think a release in China would’ve added at least another 50 million to the international gross. Possibly more considering the legs it had here. The problem is not the audience, there’s definitely a demand if you saw how many people are watching pirated copies, it’s the govt. censors blocking it. |

I'm not even going to go into how much people might or might not be doing any of that, as it is highly speculative. But you're completely wrong when you say it all comes down simply to what the officials do or do not approve. Hollywood executives have already gone on the record saying they perceive weaker demand for their movies across the board, given that even fewer foreign movies have played there recently, and what they perceive as greater local interest in local movies. I'm not claiming that they are right or wrong, but regardless, that is their perception and they are planning accordingly, so take that for what it's worth.

I love this movie, I think it's a great work of popular art that fully deserves all of its considerable acclaim and success.
It's starting to make me rather uneasy, however, that its success is beginning to be weaponized by a very particular band of people. You know the type, unfortunately. |

Caught a showing with the fam for the $3 movie day yesterday, and as someone who has somehow never seen the first Top Gun, I quite enjoyed it, and it was easy enough to follow along with the callbacks. Had a lot more heart than I was expecting from the trailers, and some of the action scenes were pretty tense. Saw it at the Lincoln Center IMAX, so the picture and sound were outstanding. Sure, the characterization was a bit light, but it knows what kind of movie it is. Not sure how often I'd watch it beyond that showing, but I'll be interested to see how it holds up on a small screen.
