Anyone who says they don't want to see Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer recreate the magic of this scene is a goddamn liar.

Still the hottest scene in movie history.

The heat.

...my god the heat.

Then put me on trial for perjury, because I have zero interest in this kind of scene again. They're supposed to be hotshot fighter pilots, not lifeguards.

First of all, I'm not very excited to see a sequel to a classic of this level... It's just not possible to live up to the original and therefore is destined to be a let down. It would be like Nolan Ryan's kid becoming a major league pitcher... Nice try kid, but your dad's Nolan Ryan, you will never live up to the name!

But... Since it seems somewhat inevitable They should be very cautious with who they bring back.
Tom Cruise - Definitely!! He can still pull it off!
Kelly McGillis - Hell no! Not without a massive make over. Otherwise just skip her all together.
Val Kilmer - I'd love to see Ice Man and Maverick back together but Val didn't age as well as Tom so they would be a ridiculous duo at this point. Tom Skerritt - A small part for Maverick's old mentor would be a great addition.
Michael Ironside - He wasn't significant enough to matter. Would be to blatant if they brought him back.
Clarence Gilyard - WHO? OK, I know who he was, but WAY too insignificant to bring back.
Meg Ryan - Maybe a quick appearance, but no need for anything more. Other than her connection to Goose, her character was pretty insignificant also.

The one character and the one scene that I would absolutely have to have it were up to me is Maverick buzzing the tower one last time and the same guy getting all pissed off and spilling his coffee.

If they do nothing I've asked, they have to at least give me that one line.... "Negative ghost rider, the pattern is full."... C'mon... please!!

It was a different time for movies (hell, we're talking Almost 30 yrs ago!), so those Eye Candy scenes for the ladies happened then & still do in movies today. If you're a Female, then you prob enjoy those scenes; if not, go get some more popcorn or hit the men's room

Can they get Nicolas Cage to say that line?

I still think this movie might just be better off as its own thing and not as a Top Gun sequel. I mean, it's about drones. What do jet fighter pilots do these days besides scramble to intercept airplanes that pose a threat?

I would laugh my head off at that; they should definitely include it.

I don't think Val Kilmer can fit in the cockpit anymore.

I saw Top Gun several times in the theater with friends over a summer and the soundtrack was huge. They just don't make soundtracks like they used to. Kenny Loggins was awesome.

What does that even mean? They were playing volleyball!

Besides they already made a Top Gun 2...sort of. They were going to do one in the late 80's but could never come up with a good script so to fulfill Tom's obligation to Paramount (He was on a three picture deal for them at the time) they replaced a sequel for Top Gun and made Days of Thunder. About 6 or 7 years ago there were rumors of a film with Tom as an instructor, so glad nothing has materialized. Sometimes its best to leave things in the past.

btw the volleyball scene was my wife's favorite! This was the first film we saw as a married couple in 86. The film has not really aged well but it was our favorite film together for a long time.

I dunno if they can make a fun and entertaining movie in the vein of the original if they're including drone warfare. I watched The Good Kill, the topic is just too depressing.

I'll make fun of Top Gun all day and all night, but there's been a serious lack of cool Jet fighting scenes + good Pop Rock music montages this past decade(s)!

yep, aka - Top Gun on Wheels. and some cheesy dialog to go with it too. "There's nothing I can't do with a race car"
"You two looked like a bunch of monkeys tryin to hump a football out there"

If you read the way that he makes that statement, it's far more about the content of the script than about an official announcement.

So, Maverick is back... on paper.

I do hope that it happens though. It would be neat to see what they come up with... even if it's terrible.

"Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby."

On drones, I haven't seen any film use them to great advantage yet. I think they're usually a boring, superficially philosophic 'techno' gimmick to sell tickets. "Oblivion" is the best example of this to me. I really disliked "Oblivion." Although it did look nice, it had no soul, and was entirely derivative of sci-fi classics. Drones had very little presence in the film yet all the promotion for the film was about drones. VICE even had an "Oblivion" 'drone' party at SXSW that year. "Good Kill" was all melodrama. But I did like how they were used in "Body of Lies." Overall, I think it's a lazy plot device to center a film around.

I would think a Top Gun sequel would have to be really good, or at least a lot of fun, for Cruise to return. Seems like something Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis or Murphy would do with their careers struggling -- going back to the well to make another Rambo, Terminator, Die Hard or Beverly Hills Cop. Cruise is doing a lot better than all of them combined.
