In the Wiki link above you are welcome to read it all.
Or just for fun read the section entitled: Timeline of highest-grossing films

It's not easy to determine with absolute definitive certainty the rank of all time top grossing films; depending of what constitute box office revenues, strictly, and, the time, the places, the culture affecting audiences, transportation, numbers of theaters worldwide, ticket prices, population geography, demography and the billions of people (total population) from 1900 to 2022. It's like the Spanish Flu of 1917 compared to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) of the present day. Some people even say that people are still dying from the 1917 Flu pandemic.
With movies and their revenues @ the box office there's no absolute.
So, we play with what best we got. That's what we do in life as in death.
Money is in our best interest before our health. Living rich than dying poor.
...Something similar to that tune anyway.

Right now Top Gun: Maverick is still climbing the ladder of all-time top grossing flicks, domestically and worldwide. Not even a week ago it was @ #29 position worldwide, today it's @ #22, and it will reach somewhere around the rainbow ... between #15 and 12 ... I pretty much believe with quasi certainty. But I have zero clue where exactly; too many factors are in line, too many variables, too many variants, like a virus ...

But I'll bet Paramount can't wait for them to start shooting

Honestly, leave it at "Maverick". He's made his peace with the trauma of his past with Goose and Rooster and flew off into the sunset beautifully with Penny. The only story left to do would be one that ends in
[Show spoiler]Maverick's death and I honestly doubt anyone wants to pay to see Tom Cruise get killed off in another "Top Gun"
. But that's just me.

Presumably he still has important lessons to pass on to the younger generations.

Because of varying ticket prices for children and seniors, another monkey wrench gets thrown into the mix. In 1987, for the 50th anniversary of Snow White, the Mouse advertised Snow White as "the most popular film" ever released, meaning more humans around the globe had seen it over the previous years, the most seats sold. That tag didn't last long, Disney's never used that again, but it just shows statistics can be played with to make all sorts of arguments. Don't take any of these all-time lists too seriously when trying to lay claim to popularity.

But we don't, nobody do.
Still doesn't take away the near $100 million paycheck's Tom Cruise's raise factor.

Don't take my breath away ... my bread?

Maverick gets shot down over the Mediterranean Sea and captured, and the U.S. government won't do anything to step in when the fictional enemy country plans to execute him. Aspiring pilot Amelia Benjamin, fresh off of an Air Force Academy rejection, decides to come up with her own rescue plan and needs Rooster's help -- and a new playlist on her phone -- to pull it off.

So what can a possible Part 3 be about anyway ? Terrorist take over a Navy base ? Netflix just released a similar movie this summer. Stealth did the AI thing in full. Battleship even did the whole alien thing. If someone thinks of it its probably been done
