Meanwhile, I saw the open-matte version of Skyfall on IMAX a few years later and feel that film works much better in 1.9 rather than the 2.39 version presented in conventional theatres and on Blu-ray. I wish that Mendes and Deakins had made the IMAX version available as a special feature (kind of like the three versions of On the Waterfront on the Criterion Blu-ray) instead of refusing to acknowledge it.

I guess if Cameron prefers tall over wide, Mendes prefers wide over tall (Spectre was shot mainly with anamorphic lenses with the exception of some Super 35 shots).
Same, it was spectacular in that ratio and I wish it were available on disc that way. I understand the "but it's not the real intended AR" argument, but having it as an option would be sweet. Maybe on UHD? *le sigh*

Was VERY disappointed that the Hateful Eight was screened in cropped 2.35:1 when I saw it. A friend reported the same. Is it like this everywhere?

I even saw it on a big screen so it could have done fine with the reduced height.

My screening was the OAR letterboxed in the frame.

On home video it will be in 2.76:1.

When I saw it, they showed it full 70mm. Then again, I only saw the first half-hour. So ...

Talking about home releases, I seem to be noticing more and more that are filling my TV screen. So I guess cinema aspect ratios are becoming more unified but now with a home media focus.

Though it won't open until next year, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk is intended to be presented in 2.20 as it will be shot in 65mm (though IMAX versions will feature shifting aspect ratios for the sequences shot on IMAX cameras).

I posted the following question in the H8 thread, but nobody answered:

So... I'm curious. Using the following image as a reference, what size would Ultra Panavision be?

Hopefully this thread is more appropriate...

Please just kill off 16:9 and 1:85. It's way too boxy.
