Superman is a generational character and people love the version they grew up with on the small or big screen. For me, I grew up with Christopher Reeve. Being one of the first movies I ever saw on VHS, it was and still is genuinely magical from the period, acting and music. Christopher Reeve was always the one that I measured others up to, because he genuinely made the character interesting and it was the first big budget special effects movie for the character. I saw and could believe Clark Kent and Superman as two people due to their characterisation, and I could see and feel his sincerity and goodness.

We see Superman through our own nostalgic prism. The character's popularity arguably declined, he's seen as less interesting than characters like Wolverine or The Punisher. It happened through the 1990s in comics. However, stories like Kingdom Come and What's So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way have addressed this well.

The character has evolved, it's moved away from the Reeve portrayal a little at times (Clark Kent, not as Superman). Brandon Routh did a great job with very little, I personally liked the film and they tried to humanise him more on screen (though this was seen as 'emo' Superman). Snyder took his own direction, it had to be new, and tried to ground it in reality even more. Cavil's Superman is good, but again, I feel he's been let down by the direction of his character at times. I would like to see him back, but truth is the whole Snyder direction was not as successful as WB wanted and it has little apparent future. WB has mismanaged this character for some years now, and I have no idea what they're doing now (will Flashpoint reboot it?). I really look forward to seeing Superman and Lois, once the UK gets it as I hear great things. From the clips I've seen, the characterisation seems spot on as both Clark Kent and Superman. It's trying to marry all aspects seen so far.

I had a whole rant written here, but...nah. Others have pointed it out already.

I also continue to see a lot of "Louis Lane" or "Louis and Clark" ...I guess people let their auto correct do the work... I never see Tony Stark or Peter Parker misspelled...except as intentional IDs here!

But none of this, of course, really has anything to do with Superman Returns... A film I will kindly refrain from commenting on, other than to say...
$10 MILLION DOLLARS.

Whoever decided a Superman movie needed to have a literal turd oriented color scheme should be slapped.

Easily the ugliest looking Superman movie to date.

IIRC, isn't that only due from the Blu-Ray transfer?

Also heard rumors of a 4K release for it so hope that will be fixed.

Would be nice to see a 4KUHD of this that both reinstates the Return to Krypton deleted scene into the main film and improves the dull, muted color palette to one that is brighter and more vibrant.

Currently rewatching this and so far so good. Pq is poor as expected but, I'm very surprised how well the cgi holds up considering it's age. 4k UHD please?

Remember all the hate posted online about this movie at the time of its release more than the actual movie itself. Superman's one of those wholesome, classic characters that brings a lot of nostalgia. I don't mind the changes over the years as well since it's probably tough to keep a story going for a character who has been around since the 1930s.

I enjoyed the film when it was first released, but over the years it hasn't aged very well IMO. I think Singer relied too much on nostalgia, and this kept the film from standing on its own two feet. The basic story was just another rehash of the 1978 original, especially Lex's land-grab ambitions all over again.

A 4K version of this is almost impossible, since it was filmed in 2K at the time. Any attempt to increase the resolution would lead to a loss in picture quality.

A couple years ago I binged all the Reeve films for the first time, and then followed it up with a re-watch of Superman Returns, the first time I'd seen it in a long time. I'd forgotten just how much I enjoyed it, with Kate Bosworth being the only real weak point for me.

Despite being an '80s kid I never saw the Reeve films growing up, so this was the first Superman movie I ever saw, and even with no attachment or sense of nostalgia for those earlier films I liked it a lot. After that Reeve-continuity binge a couple years ago I ultimately ranked Superman Returns second behind the original '78 film.

Totally possible. There's some great looking upscales on 4K.

With the way the Blu-ray looks, it can be easily done. I'm not thinking about the improvements in resolution, but more on the HDR side of things.

I'll even settle for a remastered regular Blu-ray.

Without wanting to sound like a complete douchebag, you couldn't be more wrong if you tried.
