If they're suppressing this film to be re-released in any capacity due to Singer and Spacey, then that's bullshit. An entire cast and crew worked on that film who are innocent. Spacey is technically not even guilty nor charged of anything. It's stupid to punish others as well as fans of the film. It's Superman. Let it fly.

The reason is actually technical not due to the talent. The movie, like Zodiac, was shot on a digital camera at a fixed 1080 resolution. Ted was shot with the same camera and Shout’s 4K disc is not an impressive upgrade due to the camera’s limitations.

Further, like Ted, all the visual effects and CGI had to match the 1080 resolution so those will suffer from upscaling artifacts. The main benefit would be HDR but that’s not the whole picture. So to speak.

Good movie. Should be out in 4k just for the opening scene and the plane scene alone.

An HDR upscale would still benefit this movie. It hasn't had remaster since its first release in 2006.

It has not had a remaster because it was digitally shot.

And that’s up to Warner to decide if it is worth the effort and well, they are skipping Speed Racer (also digitally shot) despite the Wachowski’s wanting it on 4K.

No, Ted's 4K suffered because they bungled the color grade, tons of black crush with an ugly yellow filter for some reason. If they had left the colors alone it actually would've been a pretty decent upgrade from the caps I've seen.

I'm fairly sure these movies being digitally shot has nothing to do with their lack of 4Ks. They've said nothing about why, but a lot of these digitally shot movies also just have low demand in their eyes. Hell, Shout JUST gave us Summer Wars on 4K, a movie that was made in f*****g 720p (with plenty of sub-720 CG shots scattered throughout as well!) with a fairly reserved Rec.709-level color grade. The boost there was better compression and better scaling than the original Blu-ray, and the same would apply for stuff like Superman Returns or Speed Racer, as they're victims of low-bitrate VC-1 encodes meant for HD-DVD despite both movies being over 2 hours long. Better compression and proper HDR grades that preserve the original colors (which many early Blu-ray transfers of contemporary/new movies did NOT by the way) would go a long way. Not to mention 4K's resolution boost means full 4:4:4 chroma for 1080p/2K content. These movies are also from a time where regardless of the cameras used to shoot them, they're almost certainly archived on 2K DIs like most modern movies are. Warner has done sooooooo many digitally shot 2K upscales in the past too idk why they'd stop at Superman Returns or Speed Racer.

We're getting 28 Days Later on 4k. Any questions about source quality not being up to snuff should be moot.

I personally really like Superman III.

Superman Returns was just a very dull and disappointing attempt to recapture what the first two films had. Rough was good, but the rest of the cast just didn't come remotely close to being as good as the originals, and the film just lacked any of the charm or appeal of the originals.
As rough as Superman IV was, it was still ultimately more entertaining that Superman Returns, which literally did nothing new.

That is absolute unbridled nonsense, even by your standards. Just because the camera was 1080p there's nothing to be gained? Seriously? It's like we've gone back a decade and HDR doesn't exist and resolution is the only possible reason for upgrading. The movie was finished out to a regulation 2K DI for the time and would be just as viable for a 4K uprez and HDR pass as anything else finished 2K...of which there's an awful lot on UHD.

In some ways the Panavision Genesis camera used on SR is actually betterer than modern ones (and certainly superior to the Sony CineAltas of the time with their tiny 2/3" chips) because it didn't use a Bayer array sensor (which splits the photosites between half green, quarter blue, quarter red), instead it offered full RGB photosites from a 12MP 35mm-width sensor for a supersampled 1080p 4:4:4 10-bit output which can capture a ton of range.

I don't know if you've seen Predators on UHD - also shot on Genesis - but the HDR on that absolutely shreds the SDR Blu-ray; you won't get more detail, no, but as we said it's not 2016 any more and the improvements to range and colour are not subtle, oh mai: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=2827

Regardless if you love or hate the movie this should be out on 4K UHD. It did $391 million worldwide at the box office. There are movies that get a 4K UHD release that are not as popular or have made less at the box office.

Superman Returns is a fantastic film and I’ll never understand the hate, nor the studio’s refusal to go ahead with a sequel because they deemed it a failure. A failure that earned nearly $400m at the box office??

Routh is perfect, Singer directs the hell out of it, and made one of the greatest action scenes ever with the airplane rescue.

This urgently needs a 4K release.

It's budget was reported between $204-270 million. Add in marketing and that $400 million box office doesn't come close to justifying a sequel back in 2006.

Though I do agree that it needs a 4K release and a shame it hasn't gotten one yet.

By my estimation it needed to make around $625-650,000,000 before it made a dollar of profit off its theatrical run. Superman is also tied into some crazy backend deals.

I like some of the film, the plane rescue is exhilarating, and Routh would have made a great lead, but it has a lot of issues.

Yes, it needs a new master, but it would need decent work.
