But hey, it’s their ideals they’re compromising so it’s up to them. These 2.1 features aren’t going to go away and I don’t have an issue with them in themselves despite being utterly, completely and totally useless for me; I’d just prefer it if they didn’t bork the video processing as a result. These are early days for the chips though and it’s not like I’m needing to buy a TV right this second so I can wait for them to get the whole package working as it should (tho now I’ve said that the Zed will prolly self destruct in five seconds). |

Interesting to see that Panasonic finally including 2.1 has had this effect, and it certainly explains why they’ve taken their time doing so.
I think their desire to include gaming features makes sense. I think a very high percentage of those buying OLEDs will want VRR and 120hz, not because they’re super hardcore gamers but simply because they own a game console and if they’re going to pick up a new TV, they want something they feel is future proofed with all the latest features. When I upgraded from my old plasma last year, I chose to sacrifice 2.1 for the picture accuracy of Panasonic and got a GZ950. All of my friends chose LG, though. It wasn’t even a consideration for them - they wouldn’t buy something that didn’t have the 2.1 features built in. These are regular dads who game occasionally on the PS5, not hardcore mega nerds. Honestly, I think these features are much more important than you might think, and Panny are right to acknowledge that and include them. Obviously that should never be at the expense of PQ - sounds like they’ve screwed up this year’s badly - but the intention makes sense. I’m interested to see how their 2022 sets are, I’m confident they’ll turn it around. |

I recall people on here worrying about whether their UHD player had 2.1 or would get an update for it, but an update for what? A bunch of features that literally have nothing to do with movie playback whatsoever. I know because I sold TVs for 15 years, not recently but although the tech changes the FOMO never dies. I’ve said this before but my favourite memory is always when customers would lead with “I want a smart TV” followed by the award-winning classic “What is a smart TV?”. They may not have a clue what it is, but they know they need it! ![]() |

Former fellow TV sales person.
Major talking points of old were: How bright, how thin, how many Ps, no glare -but no fuzziness or dimness due to anti-reflection coating, and how cheap. Same ol'crap today, things never change. The thinness factor was more often than not completely superfluous for most folks intended setup but it was extremely important for many to have it be as thin as possible. Are you going to be wall mounting this TV? No. Then you will be placing it on a TV stand or some other similar furniture? Yes. Will it be up against a wall? Yes. Well, considering the budget you have indicated and factoring in the other features you want then perhaps the thinness factor should be of a lesser priority. ...I want it to be thin! And Cheap! *Sigh Last edited by KMFDMvsEnya; 07-21-2021 at 11:21 PM. |

It’s funny all the researching we do for TVs acting like we’re gonna keep it for 20 years even though will probably replace it in 5

Still rocking a Panasonic VT60 as my primary display, although I am likely an outlier these days in actually trying to keep things going as long as possible.
Also have a Kuro Pro-111 kicking around but that has been mothballed for a number of years, it remains in full working order. |

And for some people that’s 5 months, not 5 years. Though I’ve had my ZD9 for 4 years already, that’s easily the longest I’ve owned a TV for in the last 20 years. Hard to believe I bought my first 4K TV 8 years ago though!

If I had to replace my display today it would be the LG C1.
OLED is the closest thing I feel to be a worthy successor to my VT60 but the motion resolution has causted me to hold off for as long as possible. Also the more limited HDR performance. I really want at least 1,000 nits. |

I would say that the 2.1 features are genuinely very useful for gaming - 120hz support is growing rapidly, particularly on Xbox. And gaming is far from a niche pursuit these days. In fact, I'd wager most people buying an OLED are planning to do at least some gaming on it. Whether people know what the benefit of VRR or 120hz actually is or not, if they own a Series X or PS5 and they're in the market for a new TV, they'll want something that can use the new features those consoles offer. The problem is, as you point out, Panasonic have compromised their primary USP in order to do it. That's a complete mistake - they should've waited until they could implement 2.1 features and maintain class-leading accuracy at the same time. Just my two cents - I'm looking forward to a point in the future where Panny have got it sorted and I can get something that boasts the gaming features on top of a terrific picture. Until then I'm sticking with my GZ ![]() Last edited by wakka; 07-22-2021 at 01:12 PM. |
