It really is a love or hate thing...and I LOVE it. The 24p Blu has the requisite motion blur and so it's got that kind of detachment from reality that all movies have, there's a veil between the action and the viewer. But the 60fps version removes that veil, it's like you're there with them rather than watching a recorded edition of events and the sense of immersion is staggering. In that vein I can understand why the 4K version of the film itself is worthy of higher marks because things like the motif of addressing the viewer directly feels more impersonal and emotionally distant in 24p, but in 60p you can see every tiny little tic and twitch on their faces. Just...wow.

As for the other UHD niceties, I'm watching this in 8-bit 4:2:0 SDR 709 and it's still got a more refined and vibrant colour palette than the regular Blu, with the extra range giving the usual amount of extra depth to highlights. I spotted the shimmering on the Humvee at 1h4m but apart from that no other aliasing/encoding nasties were evident, there's a bunch of banding on the 37 studio logos at the start of the film so I feared the worst (given that it's being dithered down from 10 to 8-bit) but I spotted none during the film itself, not in the skies and not during during the trickier low-APL moments like Billy hiding behind the curtain at the press conference.

The Atmos audio is incroyable too, maybe not the greatest mix you'll ever hear but during the half time show it comes alive and ERMAGERD the bass is delicious, the DTS-HD on the Blu is fine but this is something else.
This really is the best home video experience to date.

Wouldn't it HAVE to be a 100GB disc? 60fps is basically 2.5x the normal amount of data for a movie.

Your absolutely right it's something else! The Atmos track during that halftime show felt like being on that stage in Texas Stadium! Pure demo quality, video & audio!

No, it's not. There's an overhead needed for sure because of the extra frames but keep in mind how interframe compression works, by using a reference frame and encoding the difference from that frame, so when you have 60 frames the difference between them is actually reduced in temporal complexity vs 24fps. And there's also the lack of grain/noise in this case which makes compression much less messy.

But yes, I'm glad it's a triple-stacker regardless.

That's exactly what it felt like, when that flag video wall thingy raises up and the men march down with Destiny's Child blaring out it's like you're there.

I must admit that despite my initial skepticism, this movie has me craving more 4K releases with native HFR.

Some of the most impressive video I've ever seen. That and the stadium seating scenes, those blues and reds pop off the screen.

Yis. You know am a ginormous 3d nerd and the 3d is looking good but the 2D HFR is just my much preferred version of Halftime as well, by a long shot (perhaps if I saw the 3d hfr version I'd be saying differently). I watched on Sunday and evryone I saw it with enjoyed the look of it as well. It made an otherwise mediocre movie very enjoyable to watch, for me at least. I saw the aliasing on the humvee's hood as well, good eye.

Isn't 60fps over HDMI 2.0 is limited to 8-bit when using 4:4:4. I don't think that would work with HDR. A 10 or 12-bit 4:4:4 signal exceeds the bandwidth of current cables, so maybe that has something to do with the artifact you've seen.

With everything on Auto, my Oppo also chooses to output 12-bit 4:2:2. I assume because anything greater would be too much for the current hardware.

Yes, because 12-bit 4:4:4 4K60 exceeds the current HDMI 2.0 spec, and 10-bit isn't in there either for 4K60 4:4:4 as you say.

With everything on Auto the OPPO should spit out a maximum of 12-bit 4:4:4 for 4K24 (though even some 'full fat' HDR TVs choke on this output) and 12-bit 4:2:2 for 4K60. The Panasonic will do the same.
