The BD 3-D version will very likely be 1080p/24fps, but .. the BD 3D specs also allow for 720p/60fps 3-D.

In either case, I commend Sony for their combo offerings on this title.

And yes, all UHD TV's and players must be able to handle 60 fps to receive industry and BDA certification.

HDMI 2.0 supports 4K 60 fps. I think most newer TVs are equipped with that.

More than likely players will spit out native 4:2:0 due to the current limitations in the HDMI spec. regarding 60 fps.

TV's will have to do the chroma upconversion internally.

Well, yeah. 4:2:0 is what it's actually encoded at so it's not a big deal, although TVs like my own with the 'lite' HDMI 2.0 chips will have the 10-bit 4K60 signal downgraded to 8-bit 4K60. But with the extra temporal resolution it should still look outstanding.

Thanks for the clarification. In that case, this will end up being a day one purchase. Really wanted to catch the HFR 3D theatrically but wasn't able to.

Providing that the TV manufacturers haven't cut any corners with their internal video processing then 4K60 and HDR shouldn't be mutually exclusive, e.g. 4K60 is a far bigger strain on bandwidth than HDR so if a TV has the proper full fat HDMI 2.0 chip then it should be fine with a 4K60 HDR input, but the question remains as to whether the processing chokes on it.

People with the 10.2 Gb/s HDMI chips in their gear will have to confront this issue, but then again most of those sets won't have HDR anyway so it's a moo point, and if the Panasonic UHD player is set to 4:2:0 for 4K50/60 then it will convert that content to SDR by default.

How can you know if your TV has the 'full fat HDMI 2.0 chip' or the '10.2 Gb/s HDMI chip'? Is it stated in the specifications some way?

You'll know it on a Sony if "YUV420" is listed for 4K60, as that's their way of describing the 8-bit 4:2:0 bandwidth limitation. I dunno about other manufacturers though.

The Hobbitses are 48fps though, and there's no 48p in the UHD spec. One possible way around it is a 50p encode with a couple of interpolated frames added in, although I guess the same could apply to an interpolated 60p version but that'd need a full 20% of its frames interpolated which could get messy unless it was done with the proper care and attention.

Yeah, but it seems like such a huge title that they really couldn't afford to mess that up, then again, I do remember all the cries about green tint in Fellowship and whatnot.

UHD 4K can handle on 30p or 60p only.

I was inspecting...60p need HDMI bandwidth 27.3 gpbt look like HDMI 2.1 cable

Don't know how to working on television...
