I've pondered this myself..I'm rather anti-social at my place of employment however I'm one of maybe three (out of 65+ associates) who actually get shit done quickly. If I were to quit next week, I don't think anyone will miss me however they'll definitely have larger workloads/longer days.

We're all replaceable no doubt.

But I don't want to spend my working years being a total dud of a person that people don't want to hang with or talk to, nor do I want to actively avoid being social with people.

That would suck.

I'm pretty sure all of my co-workers think I'm bat sh*t crazy and they'd be right. That being said, despite being not remotely technical (considering my field), I produce quality work, I'm super collaborative, easy to talk to and I'm the guy they come to when they have to vent about work in general or other co-workers. So, in that respect, I feel as though I am valued.

Watch, I'll be surplussed next week, haha.

I'm sort of the same.

Have made good friends where I work and we share stories about family, co-workers etc. We go out to eat, we visit now and then if we're passing by each others office. We chat outside of work at times. It makes for a much more pleasant work day.

I couldn't agree more. Your work peeps see you as much or more than your family so why not try to get along, find some commonality, slug beers after work? I'd say 95% of my work interaction is via the phone so I learned how to put my personality out there via those lines years ago from working at a payroll company and it has paid off immensely.

If I had to sit and stare at a computer/files/walls all day and not interact with anyone, I'd hate life.
I have to like the people first in order to reach out and want to spend time away from work. Luckily 2 of the 4 I dislike the most are going to be gone by the time I get back from next week's PTO. So this place is about to get a lot more tolerable for me.

Do you hang out with various people at work? Lunch with any of them, talk non-work talk with any of them? Go to Happy Hours with any?

I love this type of work environment personally. I'm naturally introverted so I despise forced interaction with people. The problem with being friends with co workers (and to a larger extent dating co workers) is you have to see these people every day no matter what. Working with someone for 8 hours and then hanging out with them after work and then working with them for 8 hours the next day is too much for me no matter how much I get along with them.

It is very rare for me to hang out with people away from work. Partially due to my busy schedule and partially due to a lack of interest.

Do you even talk in a social way with co-workers during work, or do you just wander into work and become a work hermit, then clock out?

There's a LOT of snitching here so I've learned to pretty much keep to myself as much as possible. Lot of people take shit here way too personally or the wrong way.

i work with a few people that i've hung out with outside of work (i.e., went to the range and did some shooting).

i'm cordial to most people i work with, but there are a few (maybe 3 or 4) who i can hang out with outside of work and be actual friends with.

there are a few that i'm not fond of, and i don't really interact with them. so i don't have to worry them for the most part.

It’s more of the working atmosphere. The layout doesn’t make it easy to socialize.

Hey bud sorry to hear about the passing of your friend..I'm gonna be honest with you, (s)he likely would want to see you happy. If going to the movies will make you happy, I say go.
