Would you give up a 7am-3pm mon-fri job that you enjoy for a better paying job that you would also enjoy but would have to work nights and weekends?

Tomorrow is my wife’s big birthday and her friends plan to be in our town around noon. I’ll be at work (hopefully getting close to completing my resets), but my apparently plans to do something while I’m at work. And her friends have ask that I postpone my plans to take her to Paris, Tx until next week so they can spend time with her. Which makes me wonder how she’s going to feel knowing all I’ve done is presents and some decorations around the house. Fingers crossed I can get up and handle wrapping stuff up while she sleeps.

Hourly to salary but equivalent to about $5 an hour more.

What kind of job security would you have compared to what you currently have?

It would be going from a company that’s been around for 76 years to a company that’s only been around for 5.

An additional $10K is a nice bump, but whether it would be worth it probably depends on one's current annual earnings and benefits. As for only being a 5-year old company, all companies have to start somewhere and since half of new businesses fail by 5 years they've at least made it that far.

for me, it would depend on the happiness. would the new position and extra money make me happier. the hours would not. i'd much prefer the 7am-3pm vs nights and weekends. sure the extra money would be good, but if i wouldn't be as happy or happier, then it wouldn't be worth it, to me.

I would. I hate working mornings and would much rather work weekends than weekdays. I'm a night owl too.

I’m going to have to think about it. It would also be a big position change. Going from a marketing specialist within a retail company to the general manager of an independent theatre.

Hopefully I can see my cousins over the Fourth of July weekend. I need a reprieve of being here and also get some of my movies, games, music and books/manga.

I'm only 8 hours away but wished I lived closer since lately since dad dying in 2015 I've been getting closer to my aunts and their children (my cousins of course :P) I have the best family that loves me that it was difficult to be with growing up since mom prevented a lot of get togethers.

I've been at my current job for 24 years. There's no possibility for promotion but I already basically run the day-to-day operations of the Lobby where I'm posted so I don't really need a fancy title. Salary is more than decent. Hours are OK (7:30 am - 5:30 PM M-F). Would I give this up for more money/better hours? Not in a million years. Here's why. There's no one micro managing me. I don't even have a Supervisor. I frequently arrive late and take longer lunch hours than what I'm assigned. I have weekends off, 20 paid vacation days a year, sick days, holidays off (and paid), health and dental insurance and I get yearly bumps in salary without asking for them, not to mention a great bonus and tips from my tenants (I make an average of $1,100 a year in X-Mas tips). I'm going to give all this up for more money/prestige? Hell no. Moral of the story: If you're happy where you are, why trade that for uncertainty?

Because maybe what you’re doing isn’t what you want to be doing. You can like your job and enjoy what you do, but it isn’t ultimately what you want in life. My current job has some of the best benefits around. I get four weeks PTO yearly, one week of sick time on top of that, paid holidays off, yearly raises, weekends off, my total health coverage only costs me $50 a month for medical dental and vision, I get a 100% 401k match up to 5%, etc etc.

...but they’re just benefits..

What I REALLY want to do is move to California and transform the film industry. But that's not gonna happen so I'm sticking with what's real and possible. Nobody really likes what they do for a living but when you got something good going you hang onto it. I've seen a LOT of people give up good jobs for "something else" and 95% of them end up unhappy, unemployed or both within the year.

And that’s the type of attitude that keeps millions of people from pursuing their dreams. You can fail or get fired from your comfortable job you have now so why not TRY to do something you really want to?
