Tired, so going to bed, hopefully I'll find more job openings on the boards to apply to tomorrow.

Why is it so hard to find a cheap Blu-ray player on Amazon these days? I need one for my breaks at work. Everything is either refurbished or upwards of $100. I bought a tiny Sony player a fw years ago for like $40 and it was perfect for what I needed it for but now, sheesh. Nothing.

We’ve been getting hit hard with rain and now it’s affecting The Pits. Last night I had about 100 tons of rock fall not far from My Machine. There was another rock fall in the other Pit that was much larger, maybe 500 tons. The Drillers had to bail on their work there.
I hope The Company doesn’t get too antsy and starts thinking about shutting down.

Everyone should check out this book! Best memoir and one of the most moving books I have ever read. Eugene Sledge set the bar very high for WWII memoirs. Sledge had served as a mortar man in the Marines at Peleliu and Okinawa. He wrote the memoir originally for himself years after the war to help purge the recurring demons of his PTSD. When he showed it to his family, they insisted he get it published.

For those that don't know, marines in the Pacific were forbidden to have diaries....diaries are useful intelligence in the hands of the enemy, so the Corps did not allow them. Sledge jotted his observations in the margins of his personal pocket bible, and these became the basis for recreating the events in his memoir.

His story, based on his memoir, is one of the three main character arcs in the mini-series The Pacific.

I last read With the Old Breed about 8 years ago. I still recall reading passages in it where, sitting comfortably in a chair or reclined on the couch, I felt my heart racing as his prose poured off the pages into my mind. His writing is so good, so real, that it was like being there as it happened. So many descriptions of life on and behind the line, of being a marine training for the next island, a lot of humor and laugh out loud moments, and some of the most harrowing and shocking descriptions of combat ever put to paper.

One of the most pulse-pounding moments of the book I will always remember.....his description of what it was like to come down the stairs of the LST on invasion day at Peleliu, entering the dimly lit bay where the amtracs were kept, boarding his amtrac, the overpowering smell of diesel as the engines idled, the sweating marines around him.....and then the signal, the bow ramp of the LST drops down, light floods into the gloomy bay, the amtrac engines roar and echo against the steel walls as the machines lurch toward the sunlight...toward the ramp, the blue ocean, the exploding wall of flame that smothered the island in the distance, and the shattering sounds of naval gunfire.

This excerpt from an interview is a brief sample in his own words:

NOTE: the visuals in the clip are of Higgins boats, not amtracs. Amtracs, or Amphibious Tractors, were tracked vehicles that could climb over a reef fringing a Pacific island, something a Higgins boat could not do. Usually the first waves of a Pacifc invasion were in amtracs to get as many men and supplies over the reef and onto the beach as quickly as possible. Later waves would arrive in Higgins boats once a beachhead perimeter had been established.

It’s excellent and blows me away what those Marines had to endure. Their bravery was surreal.
They know there’s a very good chance that they’re gonna die, and many do, but they still do their duty.
I’m only halfway through and know I’ll be reading this again in a couple of years.
It should be required reading in schools.

The rocks falls last night were pretty serious and there’s gonna be some discussion before tonight’s meeting.
The one near me was actually about 370 tons and the one by the other Drillers was about 600 tons.
It’s gotten interesting out there, 😆

Thanks buddy, I will have to check that out. And thanks to oildude for his little review. Definitely sounds like a book that should be read.

I watched Dunkirk last night and thought it was good. I'm always glad these stories, whether true or fictional, are still being told. Lest we forget.
