My birthday's on Sunday, and I've told my fiancee and daughter that it was just another day, that I didn't want to do anything special. A simple request or so I thought, but I'm getting the impression that they're planning a party anyway. For starters my daughter's been on her cell phone a lot more than usual the past couple weeks, and she accidentally left a notebook on the table that included a list of names (a guest list, perhaps?). Many of whom I haven't seen in YEARS and am certain she's never met them. I've been preoccupied with house stuff and work that I really haven't thought about this until last night, when I was dropping boxes of old family stuff off at my parents' house and my mom said something about seeing us all on Sunday for a "bday BBQ." So when I got back home I sat the kid down and reminded her that I didn't want to do anything special for this birthday, and she responded with "but Dad, you're turning 30, its a milestone..we've got to celebrate!"

I didn't do anything special for #20, what makes 30 so special? I would've been happier with some ribs, a movie night in just the three of us, and maybe an ice cream cake for tradition sake..but no now I have to suffer through hours of "you're how old? Oh I remember you when you were [daughter's] age."

Seriously I didn't even recognize some of the names on the guest list and there's a couple guys from work whom I only socialize with when I'm getting paid (as in I only talk to them at work), how the heck did my daughter/fiancee/parents get their contact info?

Sounds like they have put a lot of work into this, even though its not what you want try and be happy that you have loved ones who put the effort in and want to do something like this for you and even more people who want to celebrate the big day. Sometimes we just have to smile and say thanks... like when grandma got me those pajamas from A Christmas Story.

They are trying, in their minds, to do something nice for you. Just sit back and enjoy it.
I'd love to have people in my life that would do that for me.
You are one lucky guy.

It's more for them anyway, Mike16. You're just there for free food. The co-workers, though... Yikes!

Man, I'd be impressed if somebody went to that much trouble for my birthday. Mine have been low key, ultra-boring and practically non-existent for years now. I'd love it if somebody actually threw me a big party again.

I appreciate what they're trying to do but I only wish they'd respect my wish to not do anything special.

My thought exactly, I'm not sure how they pulled that one off..its not like I'm on facebook or any kind of social media site where they could've got a list of "friends" from. Heck, I don't even talk about any of my co-workers outside of work.

I doubt it, my family's a dysfunctional mess but looks like I won't have much of a choice

You see that's all I wanted; something low-key, boring and non existent. I would've been happy with some BBQ ribs and a movie marathon just the 3 of us. Now I have to suffer through hours of seeing friends/family I haven't seen in years (there's a reason we haven't seen each other in years..).

while i'd appreciate the effort of a b'day party, i'd be pretty upset if my family invited people i work with (mostly).

with the exception of 2...MAYBE 3...guys, i keep people i work with out of my non-work life. they stay separate. period!

and those 2, or 3, are the guys i've been shooting with. so we have common interests. but other than that, nope! don't wanna see them away from work. it's not that i don't like them, i just like to keep those parts of my life as separate as possible.

I gotta agree here. I've got a couple of guys at work I text back and forth with every now and then but that's the extent of it. I'm with these people at work because I'm paid to be there. I'm picky who I spend my free time with.

Hey that's on my mind right now as well... We're probably gonna order a pizza later, 'cause I don't feel like cooking.

I ate an entire pizza for lunch, my self-control regarding eating is pretty much non-existent today and yesterday.

Wow, I don't even want to think about how many miles you'd have to run to burn that off. My days of being able to polish off a whole pizza are way behind me, I can't even finish a 1-topping "personal pan" pizza from Pizza Hut in one sitting these days, and that's like what 4 slices?

I run quite a bit(at least I think so) but I doubt I'll be able to burn it all off. I really do need to exercise more discipline with what I put in my mouth. Will try to do so for at least the next month. Doubt supper will be much, not feeling hungry at all.

a personal pan pizza?

those things are tiny. yeah it's 4 slices, but they're like 2 inches across the back and only about 3 inches long.

Yup, believe it or not I've been known to stretch 2 meals out of one of those.

I try to eat 3000 calories a day, at the recommendation of my online running coach Hal Higdon.
