I’m wondering why people don’t understand minimum wage increases aren’t as great as they sound.

You don’t think minimum wage should adjust to meet the current cost of living?

Adjusted for inflation, people working minimum wage in 1970 were making more money than people working minimum wage today.

I know what site you are talking about.
Try a different browser.
It worked for me.
I just closed my account there.

While I agree that it should be increased, there are some major drawbacks and issues that will occur if a giant leap is made.

Hell, these damn burger flippers get orders wrong all the time, yet they expect $15 an hour? Maybe if they could do their job right, they might deserve it, but they don't.

What about everyone else? Why do the people who went to college to get better paying jobs now make equal to a burger flipper? Where is the incentive to go to college anymore if they now get the same pay?

In theory, if minimum wage goes up, then above minimum should also go up. I agree that it wouldn’t be fair if your once high paying job now becomes minimum.

I don’t mind an increase if it’s reasonable, say $9. But $15 is outrageous. Their is a reason it’s minimum wage. And everyone else should get a raise as well if that’s the case.

Just because the minimum wage goes help does not help these people. Fewer hours, fewer workers, increase in technology replacements, and costs of goods will just go up.

It was calculated about a year or two ago, if Apple was to move their iPhone production to the US it would only cost Apple 3¢ more per unit. (and remember in China they are paid far less per hour). Therefore higher wages don’t have a direct correlation to higher cost of goods. It’s only the greed of the company that would cause higher prices.

I meant if a fast food worker goes to $15, then the price of those burgers will also increase. The employee at the processing plants will want more. Everything will be impacted. And it’ll affect the consumers.

while true, apple is not about to spend that amount of extra $$$ to move their iphone production to the U.S.

three cents may not sound like a lot, but when you multiply it by how many they make/sell, it adds up to millions.

and i'm not saying you don't know this, because you obviously do. i'm just stating it for those that may not.

but i would love to see a company like apple take a big step like that and bring their production to the U.S. it would be a big show of force for other companies to do the same.

The U.S. is forced to tread lightly in their dealings with China. If China ever got choked at how trade was going, they could call in the outstanding debt and send us all into the dark ages.

I also agree that more products should be made here in N.A. We should be supporting people here with jobs. The spin-offs are massive.

Except they can't call in all of their debt as the debt has maturity dates attached. China could sell their holdings to other buyers though.

That's good to know.
When someone explained it to me (somewhat), I was freaked.

That would be great but the problem is a shortage of skilled workers in the US. Most people these days take liberal arts in college, very few get engineering degrees. The Mac Pro is produced in Texas, and that’s only possible because not many are sold each year. iPhone is too popular to do that, there wouldn’t be enough to sell. Demand would be higher than they could produce.

I'm taking FCS, my brother is a sales engineer though. Liberal arts doesn't even really sound that marketable.

Companies don’t want production here. Way too costly. Fewer labor laws, unions, no incentive to come here. There’s a workforce.

I was a theatre major in college, same with most of the people in my circle of friends. We had a math major in the circle, he was the oddball in the group.
