A few days ago, I shelled out $25 at a nearby grocery store pharmacy for a pulse oximeter so that I could check my blood oxygen levels at home.
Since reduced blood oxygen levels are one of the warning signs with COVID-19 patients, this is probably a good investment all around for any home. A couple of friends of mine who were hospitalized with the infection showed low blood oxygen levels upon entry to the emergency room. (Other symptoms usually show up before the reduced blood oxygen levels, but a low blood oxygen level is probably a good sign that you should up and go to an actual hospital as soon as possible.)

Blood oxygen levels should be in the 94% to 100% range. Mine has varied from 95% to 99%.

It's actually a fun and informative tool all around. The below photo is a reading from yesterday, when I finally sat down after my 13-mile morning run and my shower. The number on the left is my blood oxygen level, and the number on the right is my post-run pulse rate.

Which brings up another sobering set of questions - how many of us are going through life with underlying conditions, through no fault of our own? How many of us are completely and blissfully unaware?

I’m aware of mine. But I laugh when people say they are perfectly healthy and don’t have to worry. Many underlying conditions go unnoticed till you visit a doctor for something else. That’s how I found out I had Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Which makes sense that men are dying at a higher rate - men are less likely to get regular check-ups and are probably less aware of any conditions they may have.

That’s sad to hear. I just saw his wife a couple days ago on one of the morning shows and she was still upbeat.

Edit:
I also witnessed something crazy tonight at a grocery store from what I believe was about masks. The particular individual was being recorded as he was escorted out. Manager was on the phone with the police. I’m waiting for that video to go online so I can see if it was mask related.

This extract in particular is sobering.

" In each of the eight influenza pandemics to hit the United States since 1763, a relatively mild first wave — no matter what time of year it arrived — was followed by a larger, much more lethal wave a few months later, noted Michael T. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota."
It gives us a better view on what's coming up next ... the inevitable?

Has anyone eaten inside a restaurant lately? Not sure how the reopening is going across the whole country.

I went to a small place last Monday at lunch before they started the statewide mask order and 50% capacity in restaurants. There were 3 customers besides us. We drove 40 minutes expecting it to be a “to go” place but dining in was the only option. I was lazy in my approach to it and decided to stay which is surprising for me. The two employees I saw weren’t masked. No outdoor seating, not really ventilated and dark. I won’t be doing it again for the foreseeable future.

I highly recommend this. I've been saying for months that we should be hearing more about this in articles. My Huawei Smart Band 5 fitness band (had to import it from the UK) has this feature built-in and it's very accurate. Takes a reading in about 30 seconds. I hover between 96% and 99% regularly. Definitely put me a bit at ease to track it, it's fun to do, and a good idea in general to keep an eye on it if you exercise.

I definitely recommend either buying one of these stand-alone units or a fitness band with this capability. If buying a fitness band make sure you're buying one with an accurate reader.

Looks like the eggheads are contradicting themselves again...

Now they're saying the virus didn't come from China, has always been with us, and for reasons unknown just activated itself.

Also - main route of infection isn't airborne its from using the crapper.

Sigh.

In late June, President Trump said his administration would push another stimulus package. The president offered few details, however, saying, “It will be very good. It’ll be very generous.”

When asked how much the payment might be, Trump said, “You’ll find out about it. You’ll find out.” Trump added that he thought the relief funds would receive bipartisan support and could be announced “over the next couple of weeks.”

According to comments made last week by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, we should get a better idea of a relief timeline before the end of the month.

“As you’ve heard suggested, I said back in March we would take another look at this… probably in July… take a snapshot of where we are, both on the healthy front and the economic recovery front, and decide at that point what needs to be done further,” McConnell said on Tuesday.

Congress and the Senate will recess from July 3 to July 20. It’s unlikely the Senate will consider any additional relief packages before July 20.

P.S.
I don’t agree with the general comment in the article about physicians ‘gaslighting’ this or that. Some manifestations of diseases are extremely rare and difficult to pin down an etiology.
