That they were "his films" and they won't mess with how he wants them? Which is hilarious since he only directed one of them, but whatever.
If they never release them, or not for an extremely long time, then the “respecting his wishes” reason makes sense, but the guy is pretty old, so waiting to release them until he dies isn’t that many years from now. If Lucas knows this then that must feel pretty strange from his point of view. Seems almost like an insult to him if he knows they’ll release them in a decade or whenever.

Kennedy’s answer was kinda vague because the question was vague. The question seemed like it was asking if any changes will be made to the existing versions, like creating enhanced special editions that will replace the current special editions. Nothing was said about bringing the original versions back if I remember correctly.

I can imagine the press conference now:

Kathleen Kennedy: Today George Lucas has passed away. We honor his legacy and all that he has created...

Bob Iger: The Unaltered Original Trilogy will be released in time for the holiday season. Now back to George...

Lucas was the guy who fought to own and protect his movies and even to prevent studios from altering other people's movies after the respective artists had died. Are people really surprised that he protected himself and his works when he sold the company to Disney? That he wouldn't retain final cut privilege? I'd say it should be expected.

As far as the original trilogy goes, he only directed one. But he hired others to direct his remaining two movies and to help materialize his artistic intent. Movies that he funded, conceived, approved every step of the way, and had final say on.

So he was the producer/studio head is what your saying? So with that argument the head of any studio should be able to alter their films since they paid for the scripts, hired the director, actors etc. The very thing Lucas was against. He is a hypocrite. But this has been done to death.

Lucas is only against altering films when the director/auteur doesn’t give consent. He’d be perfectly fine with Francis Ford Coppola adding animation sequences to The Godfather trilogy and suppressing the original versions since they’re his movies.

The Empire Strikes Back is definitely not a Lucas movie. It's superior to his style in every way. Just like the Indiana Jones films are definitely Spielberg's movies.

Lucas mainly got lucky with Star Wars because of the limitations, but he's not really a good director. Just look at the prequels. Or the stupid choices, one after the other, regarding the "Special Editions."

Funny that the only part in Sith that's well directed (Yoda vs. Palpatine) was actually storyboarded by Spielberg.

On paper Lucas only directed one, but he pretty much did Return of the Jedi too.

Would it be difficult to restore the Special Edition of The Star Wars Trilogy in 4K? That would mean having to re-render all the CG additions in 4K. Is that even possible since most of the CG additions were done during 1995 & 1996?

Restoring the Theatrical Cuts would probably be a hell of a lot easier since it would simply be scanning the negatives in 4K and then doing major restorations.

No, more than that, he was the creator and artist behind it.

That's correct. When they are dead, there's no consent to give and the studios wanted to change them anyway. Hence his Congress speech.

On the contrary, it's true to his style. Kershner made sure of that since he knew that was the intent. Same with Marquand. The false narrative where Lucas was barely involved in TESB should have died already.

It wouldn't mean re-rendering anything. They'd just scan the filmed-out negative of the CG shots in 4K or upscale the digital files directly.

Lowry remastered the trilogy in 4K back in 2012, apparently conformed to "George's latest versions". These remasters have never seen the light of day publicly, but were shown to Gareth Edwards and Grieg Fraser when they were prepping Rogue One.

George was the best producer I ever worked with. He left me alone and only came to England a few times. I told George at one point that I was behind schedule, not that it was anyone’s fault, but because it was so complex. Many of the special effects that were done on set often did not work at all. His answer was, “Keep doing what you are doing. Just keep shooting.” This was the greatest thing for a director to hear from a producer.

I'd like to think I'd do the same, but my weak ass would buy the SEs in 4K...

Would probably wait for a sale though. #imarebel
