merlinpants,
There's nothing really Lucas can do about the visual effects of Episodes I and II unless he redid them ALL. Those two films, half of the time, are dated. It's a product of the time they did those films. ILM still did great work. It's just that the work volume for those two films were a bit too much for ILM to handle. CG wasn't at a point then as it is today. You can get away with doing 2000 visual effects in 2011... |

Now as a side note - The Predator UHE I own was bought as a curiosity because I simply didn't believe the reports on this site that it was that bad and looked that fake. I own the collectors DVD which is awful in places so I thought anything would be an upgrade. Yes, the DNR is laughably bad at times, yes it's overly distracting at times and yes even as someone who doesnt like grain that much I think they went way too far - but I still think you missed my point with the above post. This is Star Wars which will out-sell Predator 50:1 globally. Lucasfilm/ILM is a billion dollar company and DNR to the levels being intimated here have no place in this series. It's a travesty. And I stand by the fact that there are plenty of catalogue titles available where you can see more detail than in those pics of Padame (and her coat especially) |

The other issue with this argument is that the OT were a product of their time and they have been altered to reflect updated technology. It is PT vs OT again. Change one, but leave the other, when now both look pretty shoddy. I don't think anyone would have objected to the models of the OT or the mismatch effects of the PT if we hadn't been promised so much and seem to have been delivered so little. Perhaps he should have just left the films alone (all of them) and spent the money on a proper transfer and clean up. Just my thoughts. Last edited by Merlinpants; 09-06-2011 at 10:19 AM. |

Oh, Gods the DNR on that Qui-Gon pic is atrocious! Most of the other shots look OK, but still noticeably scrubbed. George is really taking the piss at this point, isn't he? How can he not be trying to anger people with this stuff? Also funny that they seemed to DNR TPM, but based on that XCU of Obi-Wan, didn't DNR the digital noise of ROTS. So film grain is bad, but digital video noise is fine? I guess I shouldn't complain, DNR is DNR. The less of it we get, the better.
"This deal is getting worse all the time!" *waits for next round of bad news* |

I prefer the original release of Predator, MPEG2 codec gave it a bit of problem handling the grain but it's miles better than the UHE which is a perfect example of how extreme DNR can be. |

merlinpants,
Jurassic is a perfect comparison to make. We won't know for another month and a half on that one but I'm willing to bet that Jurassic is going to look A LOT like Episode I, in terms of the effects not blending in. You can tell that on the Jurassic DVD. It's only going to be worse in HD. Could he have spent the past seven years perfecting EVERY visual effect across the six films? He could but at what cost? Remember, ILM does work on other productions through out the year. I mean, what would be the man power to basically, from scratch, redo THAT much work across six films? As for the Episode I transfer, he wasn't going to go beyond the look of Episodes II and III with this transfer. Frankly, it's kind of astonishing that the transfer has that much detail, even with the DNR applied to it. Having looked at the screencaps on my television last night and sitting where I always sit, they looked spectacular, with the lone exception being the Qui-Gon shot. The majority of people aren't going to tell a difference, which is kind of the point. Episodes I, IV, V, and VI could've been lights out if he rescanned those from scratch and kept the "film" look. But, clearly, Episodes II and III have dictated the look for the entire Saga from here on out. With that knowledge, are these transfers really that disappointing? Personally, I don't think so. Considering what we've been watching since '01, these films in HD look fantastic and this is how they'll probably always look for all time. We're not going to get another format after this.... Anyone from the UK got their pre-order packed as yet? I'm surprised my hasn't, big releases like these they usually lock your order down a few days early to make sure you don't scoot off and get a better offer somewhere else like the supermarkets etc.

![]() I just thought you misinterpreted me. If just a curious question, well there you have it. The UHE is just an oddity to me but I dont get wound up by it like many on here. Now if it was all over Star wars, that would be a totally different story.. |

Jimmy,
They're not. But a rescan of the film elements would've produced a better image than what we're getting on next Friday, even if the said image looks really good. The "purist" of the Original Trilogy want a more "film like" image that they remembered when watching the films originally. Lucas doesn't want the film like look anymore, even though Episodes I, IV, V, and VI have a very thin layer of film grain in the transfers. I'm not disputing the notion that a rescan of those four films wouldn't produce some excellent results, in the vain of Gone with the Wind, Ben-Hur, and Wizard of Oz... Interesting section added to Amazon.co.uk for the complete saga boxset:
This Item is Quantity Restricted In order that as many customers as possible can benefit from this offer, customers may only order limited numbers of this item for delivery in the UK. If you intended the extra products to be gifts then why not send the recipient an Amazon.co.uk Gift Certificate for the value of the item(s)? They must be near to selling out their allocated run then? |

For Lucas, a 2K digital negative of the Original Trilogy is good enough...and he has a point...to an extent.
But, there's no doubt that if he rescanned the Original Trilogy in either 4K, 6K, or 8K, the results would probably be remarkable. Last edited by Jumpman; 09-06-2011 at 11:26 AM. |
