Speculation is just that: Speculation.
So now studios have to announce what they are not going to release? Give me a break.
If a studio thinks "leaked information" will help out any of their projects(ie. business) they will leak it, and let social media roll with it. This happens all the time, in all facets of business.
I'm not saying that the UOTs won't be released, this year...on the flip side there is nothing out there that convinces me they are.
So status quo: Speculation will continue.

The same credible site that says that, every year without fail that Abyss and True Lies are out "This Year"? they like hits like every other site.

Yep, they've been saying this for about 15 years now?

They also made some claims about high quality work we were going to see with the original Trek films before they were released. lol

That being said, Disney and Fox will eventually reach a financial agreement regarding the Fox distribution deal for the first film.

It's the same film. A few CGI alterations don't negate ownership of the film or make it a new work of art. If that were the case, I could make a fan edit and file for copyright myself.

You know why the Unaltered versions are coming out? Because as strong as the rumors are not one single source be it Disney, Fox or Lucasfilm has yet to come out and say they are not coming. You don't think they know about the rumors? You don't think they know what's going on with Originaltrilogy. com? I don't think they are going to jack with fans emotions just to end the end give them the finger. I think we will know by May one way or the other...personally I think they are coming out to bring the whole Star Wars fandom together....

It's a bit confusing though as the on the Blu-ray disc as someone showed earlier states 1977, but I do see the 1997 SE date floated around a lot as per the credit. I wonder if technically it is a new new movie based on the "Special Edition" title.

Except that since that last VHS Edition it hasn't been called Special Edition.

Hmmm....but the 1997 date must still have some reference to it? There must have been some sort of reclassification (for lack of better words) otherwise they would just keep it 1977?

Copyrights expire and need to be constantly renewed.
I think it is a 20 year window. I might be wrong.

So, we'll see...
I'll look to find the actual length a copyright lasts.

Ah, ok... A Patent last 20 years.... I knew 20 years was something!

My prediction? They release the original, unaltered trilogy later this year to help market the new film. The bad news - they will only be available as part of another complete set of all episodes 1-6.

Even though I don't like the prequels, I'd be fine with that. I bought that Superman anthology set (which includes quite a few terrible films itself) just so I could own the theatrical cut of the original film with all the original sound effects, and I'd be more than willing to do the same for Star Wars. And besides, I could always watch one of the prequels when I'm in the mood for a few laughs (no offense to anybody who likes them of course).

But movies are not patented as I understand it.

I do think the 1997 year is not coincidental and somehow pertains to the SE versions (and tweaks) ever since. There is something about it distinguishing it from the unaltered original 1977 version otherwise it would not be in the ending credits. What role this plays to the unaltered originals getting released, I have no idea...let alone who decides it.

You'd think we'd be seeing pre-orders in a month or two, for a September release. Please God, let it be so!!!

Yes, it does make it a new work of art, that is why re-cuts of films, including Empire and Jedi will have dual copyrights on the end of the restoration credits.

The SE of Star Wars is distinctly 1997, and the only version that Lucasfilm owns.

If this happens, I still see the San Diego Comic Con (July) being the announcement and then pre-orders...October or November release perhaps...after the IMAX viewings in September.
