I think the best thing I can say in favour of the prequel trilogy is that at least SOME of it's good ideas were executed well.

I think the problem with the sequels is that they had no direction when making VII and VIII. Both directors were given complete freedom (even ditching the extended universe, which is fine), with no real storyline. Neither did the original trilogy, but they at least kept with an arc that was Han, Luke, and Leia. The only real arc in Last Jedi was Poe, in my opinion.

Rey and Finn, respectively stayed the same.

I think that's why Marvel is so well respected, whether you like their movies or not, their way of pumping out movies that is constructed to fit into one timeline while balancing a new storyline is something every studio is trying to recreate. I felt Lucasfilm didn't have that and solely relied on the Star Wars name and brand.

No they didn’t. Finn, for example; at the end of TFA/start of TLJ all he cared about was himself and Rey. By the end of TLJ he was a fully fledged rebelscum willing to die for the cause.

Rey training with Luke? Rey wanting desperately to find something in the arse-looking place? Her realization at the end about herself? No? Oh well.

On the positive side, whether you liked it or not, The Last Jedi kind of cleared the deck for J.J Abrahm's Episode IX to really be anything it wants to be. Basically you have Kylo Ren running the First Order and Rey and the gang in the resistance and you can take that anywhere. I was a big fan of The Force Awakens, I was much more mixed on Last Jedi, but I'm interested in seeing where JJ takes the last film, especially in the aftermath of the divisive nature of the Rian Johnson's film (plus Lando is in it!)

I am hoping Abrams can salvage the trilogy after what was done to Luke in TLJ (blah blah JJ started it blah blah) but I really can't think of any way to save the character.

I also disagree about Poe and Finn not having any character development in TLJ. They did act stupidly and almost get the resistance complete wiped out with their plans.

Rey doesn't need saving at all, she's a great character. I agree Finn and Poe need... something. Anything, honestly.

TLJ was definitely Poe's story arc. He went from this arrogant *******, to possibly the leader of the resistance.

Finn stayed the same

But Rey kind of bugs me. I like Rey, but in TFA she was this "I want to go to Jakku" to "ok, I'll hang with luke" to "I want to train as a Jedi," but then like, "jk, I'll just go fight Kylo while you hang here and die, Luke."

There is no history with her outside the fact she is a strong jedi willing person.

I get Poe as a character, the type and what he brings. Rather him brought more to the front or given more. But Finn. I don’t even like the idea of Finn.

[Show spoiler]The editing. I feel like any time it has a shot at recapturing that old Star Wars feel we're cutting to another shot prematurely and ruining the effect. It might be the same in the other nu-SW films, but TFA is the one I've seen multiple times. The last act of that movie (apart from a moment here or there) is just too flighty and distracted. It affects both comedic and serious bits.

Seriously, I'm not one who tends to fixate on editing as a flaw; frankly, if I'm invested at all, I barely notice it. But something...something just doesn't seem to work about the construction of this movie.
I’ve noticed that in all the J.J. Abrams movies I’ve seen.

But with Last Jedi, unfortunately, I personally couldn't see any good ideas, much less ones that were executed well. And for me, I think I dislike it more than the prequels because it really mishandles Luke, an iconic character I grew up with (yeah, I know Anakin/Vader wasn't handled that great in the prequels either, but Luke seemed to fare even worse).

I don't quite understand Abrams & Johnson's thinking that the old legacy characters should be shoved to the background in glorified cameo roles, when it is those characters (and our love for them) that MADE Star Wars into the phenomenon it is. I have no interest in Finn, Kylo or Rey or Poe. I doubt they're going to have any real resonance with the public 20 years from now the way Han Solo and Luke did.

I don’t think it can necessarily be anything it wants to be. For instance, it can’t have Luke be alive and do something of significance. That opportunity is long gone.

Expect nothing more than both more "mystery boxes" and more Return of the Jedi rip-offs.

TFA = ANH+TESB
TLJ = TESB+RotJ
BotF = RotJ + TPM

I think the rumored title for 9 was Balance of the Force based on a webpage's coding, but it turned out it was photoshopped.

Would they really use the same abbreviation as a popular Star Trek game?

Anthony Daniels hinted at it being the title.

What were you expecting him to do? Hire hundreds of extras with the exact same height and build, and fit them ALL with the same outfits? They are clones, after all.
