That makes more sense. It sounded like you were questioning the value of upscaling, across the board.

No, just questioning WHERE it's carried out when referencing the theatrical environment, note the emphasis on the last part throughout these posts, just in case people think I'm anti-upscaling for UHD disc all of a sudden. I touched on the differences here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...2#post16517172 but I'll lay it out in case I get any further blowbac. It's not so much the actual upscaling that gets me all gooey when it comes to 4K disc but everything else that the format provides.

Theatrical '2K native' DCDM: 12-bit gradation, wide gamut format-agnostic XYZ colour space (usually containing a P3 mastering), standard dynamic range, full chroma resolution (no subsampling), JPEG2000 intraframe compression which stores each frame individually, not the 'store one reference frame and then the difference data' approach of consumer codecs.

Theatrical '4K upscaled' DCDM: same 12-bit gradation, same XYZ colour space, same dynamic range, same full chroma rez, same J2K compression. So, the only benefit that an upscaled DCDM would have over a 'native' one - the sheer pixel density - is a function that would be carried out by the 4K display device anyway.

Consumer '1080p native' Blu-ray disc: 8-bit gradation, 709 colour space, SDR, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling (so colour is encoded at a literal quarter of the 1920x1080 luma resolution, 960x540 in this case), interframe compression using whatever ageing and inefficient codec (MPEG-2, VC-1, AVC).

Consumer '2160p upscaled' UHD Blu-ray disc: 10-bit gradation (12 if using the full Dolby enhancement layer), 2020 colour space (usually containing a P3 mastering), high dynamic range, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling (yes, it's still a quarter of the luma but a quarter of 3840x2160 is 1920x1080 so you're effectively getting the full chroma of the 2K master), interframe compression using the more efficient (though not perfect) HEVC codec with its adaptible block sizing.

So, in theory, it would be just like the consumer space, with the only potential discernible benefit being if a source upscale used better upscaling than the playback hardware could provide.

In theory, yes, but as theatrical cinema equipment (not just the PJ but also the server and media block) has to meet strict DCI compliance regs in order to play 'official' DCPs then it's not like consumer players where they're all free to carry out the internal upscaling however they like, there's no such 'spec' in place for that which is why we get the minor upscaling differences that we do between players and TVs.

Whenever there are no set standards and industry regs, we usually end up with a mess like what we have now with 4k and HDR mastering and display tech.

I'd still rather watch a 4K HDR disc than a regular DCP of any given film.

I don't think Black Panther has a 4K master. It's DCP was 2K.

Ultimately, for expediency in post, the decision was made to capture primarily in 3.4K ArriRaw with Arri’s Alexa XT camera, which Morrison paired with Panavision Primo spherical primes and zooms.
