List of UHDs that utilize 4K or Higher Masters

Any help would be appreciated as I'm kinda nervous getting into 4K since I'm not 100% convinced it's better than 1080p.

Be careful in generalizing that native 4k is somehow automatically better than a transfer based upon a 2k uprez. There are many instances where a 2k uprezzed image will look better than a true 4k UHD Blu-ray.



There are various reasons for this. Some technical based at the photographic level, some due to the quality of the transferring and mastering of the source material.



Don't let true 4k be the only reason you pick up a UHD Blu-ray version.



Another is that some UHD Blu-ray's are the only way to get Dolby Atmos and DTS: X immersive audio.

So how do you know which are which? By just checking reviews? This seems far more complicated than it should be.

There are improvements besides resolution. Color and contrast range, bit depth, immersive audio, etc.


It's no more complicated than regular Blu-ray. Many have great transfers and mastering and some are crap.

Could someone please explain in caveman terms why this is?

& is anything filmed in 4k yet or as written on here rendered 4k?

What discs did you return?

A lot of digital video sourced movies are shot in 4k and above. The trouble is that most are still mastered at 2k due to various reasons. Many have to do with the fact that a majority of digital effects houses only render at 2k.

As for movies shot with real film...it's a crap shoot as to whether a studio will scan the negatives and master the resulting video files at 4k or above. Sony is the best at going back to the original camera negatives and scanning and working in the 4k and above resolution range.

Some movies have more grain than others, which is either a natural byproduct of shooting on film (and can vary as to the film stock speed chosen and amount of light in a scene) or whether artificial digital grain has been added to a digitally shot movie.

Lucy was intended to be like a slick, squeaky-clean looking movie... more toward a digital video aesthetic you often see on Youtube or a modern nature documentary rather than going for the more traditional filmic aesthetic.


The whole point of 4k and HDR is to get closer to the professional level of movie and TV reproduction in the home. Leaving the natural grain and not scrubbing it away is the ideal as you normally end up with people who look like wax dummies otherwise.

Because I have the same LG Oled you have, and you did not mention you had the picture calibrated or adjusted in the advance options, I going to say it could very well be the advance settings of your LG are not fine tuned to what you like. If you are in England, there are folks who will come to your home and calibrate your LG. Most often, the LG out of the box does not need calibration, but I found that I had to invest a few hours in going through all of my picture settings and advance options. In the end, my 4k now looks very very good.

I went through the same thing as you did . . . I bought my 65" LD Oled, made sure I had the right 4K player, cords, everything . . . including spending a few hours adjusting all of the advance color, contrast, brightness . . . the whole boat load . . . and ran out an bought my first 4K movie from Walmart. I was very cautious because jumping from my Blu-ray disk sale price of around $5 to $7 to the new "sale" price for 4k around $20 (or more) caused me to try out one (1).

When I got home and started to play my brand new 4K . . . my heart stopped for a moment . . . because the quality of the picture was no better than a standard Blu-ray!

Solution 1: That's when I began reading and studying this very thread topic where the "true 4K titles" are listed. I felt like I was bamboozled because of extremely poor packaging on the 4k disk at the store! Loaded with evidence, I returned the disk to Walmart for a full unconditional refund.

Solution 2: What you see is what you get, which means if you receive a true 4K movie you enjoy and you are delighted with the purchase, all the good. But if you get a true 4k movie that does not live up to your expectations, then make sure you are buying from a store who will provide a full refund. The number of 4k refunds I have had since that first Walmart disaster is . . . zero as of today. I have had one or two Blu-ray refunds, but they are rare now.

As for LUCY, did you buy the official 4K edition from a reliable store? If so, then look at the 4K review on the picture quality posted here.

Based on what I read, I would think the 4k image would be outstanding. Here is the quote:

I gotta tell you . . . after I read that review and checked the Amazon price, I could not resist . . . and I just bought the LUCY 4k movie for a net delivered cost of $13.24 US using my 5% discount and $1 in free streaming movie credit . . . as I write this.

So I went down the rabbit hole on this one, and found more dialog here. Which led me back to the review here. The 4k review boasts about how much more of an improvement this is over the older Blu-Ray edition. Although the 4k shows a Digital Intermediate (2K) (master format) , and the Amazon price is around $23.00 . . . I chose to add the title to my Amazon Steaming option for HD, which is my go-to for using the free credits. I have seen Amazon stream films at a better quality than 1080, and if they give me Digital Intermediate (2K) streaming . . . then that would be cheaper ($3.99)

All in all, if I like what I "see" and experience, than okay.

They did a 4K scan of the original camera negative then mastered a Blu-ray disc from that source.
