Who is making these decisions? I understand that original Star Wars trilogy has legal issues, but I would put Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ahead of visually dull tripe like Hunt for Red October or A Few Good Men.
A Few Good Men? Heck, 12 Angry Men would be a better choice. Vertigo! North By Northwest! Ran! Studios, are you listening to your customers? |

They go by tie-in's (Tom Cruise hit a resurgence with the MI franchise, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is back via a streaming series, etc.). As much as I want the films you listed on great looking/sounding 4k discs, A Few Good Men and Hunt are excellent films. A Few Good Men is stunning and very filmlike on UHD... one of the best examples of 35mm scanning to 4k so far. |

Indiana Jones, Paramount will be waiting on a big anniversary or Indy V (whichever comes first) to do the UHDs. LOTR (and the Hobbitses for those who want them) may well be in the same boat, there's a cash-in opportunity to be had with the upcoming Amazon series, either that or the 20th anniversary of FOTR in 2021. Chitty is with MGM, you've more luck winning the lottery right now than having MGM join the UHD Blu-ray fold. Lawrence, well, there's not much keeping that at bay since there are no sequels or reboots emerging on the horizon like Omar Sharif, but the window was missed for a 55th anniversary edition last year so that one could drop at any time, Sony aren't going to hang on to it until 2022! TL/DR Look, no studio just spunks its crown jewels onto any new format straightaway, UHD is still only two years old. Some studios aren't even in the game, and some that are are very reticent to provide any meaningful catalogue support. We buy the "tripe" now to ensure that the chances of getting the good stuff are as high as they can be in the current home video market. You'll be pleased to know that my UHDs of Transporter 3 and Van Wilder are on their way ![]() |

Sorry if this has already been answered as this is a long thread - is there a thread like this for HDR or DV? I'd like to know which movies came out on 4K with either of those.
PS I go to this list about every week - great thread! |

There is a thread for DV because most UHD discs have been released with HDR10 and all DV discs also use an HDR10 base layer.
