With 4k being an established format and everyone buying 4k displays and projectors, you would think they'd be making it a standard for everything. (filming, cg work, di's, etc)

Everyone seems to be working with different resolutions and studios still making mainly 2k di's for the now older 2k blu ray format.

Still no one really broadcasting in 4k. And only companies like netfilx releasing 4k content.
We still have a long way to go.

Why on earth was everyone pushing 4k tvs so much?

They don't make 2K DIs "for the now older 2K blu ray format", 2K finishes were a thing for five years before Blu-ray was even brought to market. They continue to make them 2K for issues of time and convenience and also the simple fact that the vast majority of the cinema-going audience has been happy with 2K for the last 15 years or so, you rarely see people coming out of a screening of a 2K movie going "oh that suuucked, it wasn't true 4K!" despite having been shown on 4K projectors. 3D is also something that's continuing to hamper this issue which people STILL don't realise: a 3D finish essentially means having to deliver the movie twice (once for each 'eye') and a separate 4K workflow on top of that means added time and added expense.

The reason why so much new TV stuff from the likes of amazon and netflix is 4K is because they have their own minimum specs for content providers and are able to refine their workflows to deliver said content. I mean they use the same post houses as the big boys do but they can concentrate their energies on delivering 4K content precisely because they don't have to piss about with a 3D finish, they don't have to piss about with masses of VFX shots, and they know they've got a simple 4K delivery system in place.

Is there any exact resolution information like this for The Revenant? Even thought it was shot in 3.4K and 6.5K, and IMDB says the DI is 4K, people have been able to screenshot the 4K Blu-ray with capture cards, and do direct comparisons to the 1080p Blu-ray, and there's nearly zero detail increase.

I noticed the same thing when A/B'ing the two, there's not some amazing increase in detail.

The only reason I’m saying anything at all about 2k di’s is because this is a 4k format. And I don’t think it’s unfair to expect a 4k finish.

It seems studios are just slow on the uptake, but eventually I’m sure they will move over to 4k. Just a case of tech moving faster than the standard allows.

And up till now, I have never complained about the resolution of a movie in the theater, but I have started to notice that movies look better at home than the theater. That doesn’t stop me enjoying movies in any case.

But as I said, if I’m paying for something, it’s not unfair to expect what’s advertised.

Or just go and check the DCP spec sheet. The Dark Tower was projected in 4K. One of the very rare few 4K movies this year.

I can't see this being that much better than it already is on BD. Don't get me wrong, I'm still buying in mostly because I love peanuts and will buy anything classic Peanuts, as well as the educated suspicion that there will be an improvement despite the simplistic, low budget, made-for-TV animation and old age (never underestimate the power of UHD Blu-Ray), but I'm expecting a minimal improvement, and I that's all we get, I'll be ecstatic.
